Margaret (Peggy) Sonnenberg, 94, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, at her home in Brewster, MA, with her loving daughter at her side. She left this world on a sunny Palm Sunday in the home she loved with her beloved late husband’s recorded song “It Had to be You” playing for her.
Peggy was born on June 19, 1931, in North Arlington, NJ. She attended Queen of Peace Catholic School, graduating in 1950, with her yearbook entry describing her as a “small girl with a big heart.” She always wanted a family, marrying Carl Sonnenberg in September 1953, and raising their two children in Pompton Plains, NJ. Peggy adored caring for her family and home and had also been an Avon representative for several years. She loved animals and nature and spent many happy times hiking and walking in the mountains and woods of the northeast, with New England a favorite destination. There were also very memorable travels during retirement years to places such as Yellowstone National Park and Nova Scotia.
Peggy and Carl retired to Brewster, MA, in 1990, where she enjoyed the pond view, trees, and birds in the backyard. She also enjoyed doing yard work and tending to her much loved home. She was also an avid reader of mystery books, loved walking the bike trail and was a big fan of the New England Patriots. Her strong Catholic faith guided her throughout her life, and she was always the heart of her beloved family.
Peggy is predeceased by her husband Carl Sonnenberg, her parents Jack and Grace Reid of NJ, sister Dorothy (Reid) Swirczynski and brother Charles Reid, both of NJ, and daughter-in-law Sue Sonnenberg of NY. She is survived by her daughter Eileen Sonnenberg of Brewster, MA, son Wayne Sonnenberg of Cairo, NY, and granddaughter Erin Guilfoyle of NY, as well as several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the compassionate care provided by the team at Broad Reach Hospice of Chatham, MA.
Her visiting hours will be from 3-6pm on Monday, April 13, 2026, at the Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Parkway, Orleans, MA. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at 11am, in St. Joan of Arc Church, Canal Road, Orleans, followed by her burial at Brewster Memorial Cemetery, Brewster.
Contributions may be made in her memory, to a charity of one’s choice.
