Died October 12, 2022, Orleans, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Marjorie (‘Marge’ or ‘Margie’) Murphy was born and raised in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. She graduated from Uxbridge High School in 1942 and then pursued a nursing degree at the Hahnemann Nursing School in Worcester. While completing her professional training, she joined the Red Cross Cadet Nurse program. She served as a nurse for several years before marrying her wartime sweetheart, Armand (‘Chub’) in 1946.
Margie’s husband, Armand A. Cournoyer, preceded her in death, as did her mother, Corinne Taft Murphy, her father James Patrick Murphy, her sister Muriel Worthington, and her brother, Roger Murphy.
Margie’s beloved nine children and their spouses grieve her passing. From eldest to youngest, they are Barry and Catherine Cournoyer of Indianapolis, Indiana; Cathy and Steve Grimes of Whitinsville, Massachusetts; Polly and Tommie Rains of Duncanville, Texas; Reed Cournoyer and Lisa Scott of Somerville; Massachusetts, Jo Ann Cournoyer of West Yarmouth Massachusetts; Jane Cournoyer McNicol of South Yarmouth, Massachusetts; Patty and Chris Blackburn of Brookfield, Illinois; Eric Cournoyer and Julia King, of Worcester, Massachusetts; and James Patrick (‘J’) Cournoyer and Julia Randall of Harwich Port, Massachusetts.
As much or more than her own nine, Marge adored her eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She also loved her two nieces and five nephews.
Margie was much more than a devoted spouse, mother of nine, and great-great-grandmother. She loved music and played piano throughout most of her life. She loved to dance and sing. Just this past summer, at 97, she danced and sang along to big-band music from the 1940s. Yes, she knew the words! And, the best dancer, she was always extraordinarily agile and light on her feet. She had an acute sense of humor and loved to laugh. It was infectious. She especially enjoyed laughing at herself and had a quick, often ironic, wit. In her mid-90s, legally blind, nearly deaf, wearing dentures, and sometimes forgetful, she wrote this about herself:
I can’t see
I can’t hear,
I can’t chew, and
Who are you?
