Mary was born on June 5, 1919 in Fall River, Massachusetts and grew up there and in Winchester, Massachusetts where she first met her husband in High School. Her father was a dentist, and her fondest childhood memory is going with her dad on a house call to a patient of his who had a lily pond in his yard. She loved sitting by the pond and watching the fish, waiting for her dad.
Mary attended a two year junior college in Boston and studied nursing and then business. After college Mary did secretarial work in Boston for about three years.
Dave was a Captain in the Army and was stationed in Denver, Colorado during WW II. Mary’s parents traveled with her by train to Colorado, where she and Dave were married and had the first of their three sons.
When her husband was discharged, he began a career as a salesman before finding his true calling as a minister. After serving as pastor of the Congregational Church in Rowley, Massachusetts, the Emmons moved to Bristol, Connecticut where they ran the United Church of Christ retreat center for over twenty years. They began a long love affair with Cape Cod and when they retired they moved there in 1993.
Mary was a member of the Community of Jesus in Orleans. She was an avid reader and enjoyed reading her Bible regularly and doing a daily devotional. Billy Graham was her favorite author. In addition to her favorite BLT sandwich, she had a sweet tooth and coffee ice cream was her all-time favorite!
Mary was predeceased by her husband, David, of 58 years, in 2001 and by her beloved grandson, Erik, in 2012. She is survived by her son, Stephen, and his wife, Lois, her son, Peter, and his wife, Suzanne, and her son, David Terry—three grandchildren; Erika Emmons, Troy Emmons and his wife, Sonia, and Allison Emmons, and three great-grandchildren: Rose, Jasmine, and Tyberious.
