Mary was baptized and raised in her Faith at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Fall River, MA. She graduated from Mt. St. Mary's Academy in Fall River, MA in the class of 1953 and later went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree with a Major in Education from Salve Regina College in Newport, RI in 1958. She began her teaching career in Newport, RI, but spent 35 of her 40 years as an elementary school teacher, in the Fall River Public School Department, retiring in 1998. She was a member of the Catholic Women's Club of Fall River and served as a Catechism teacher and Eucharistic Minister at St. Thomas More Church in Somerset, MA and Christ the King Parish in Mashpee, MA. Over the years, Mary enjoyed travel with family and friends to destinations such as Florida, California, Canada, Ireland, France and Italy. Many memorable summers were spent boating on Mt. Hope Bay and vacationing on Cape Cod and the Islands. She always loved celebrating her Irish heritage, especially traditional Irish music. She was an avid and life-long Boston Red Sox fan. In more recent years, Mary loved being a doting grandmother to her beloved girls.

Mary and her husband Leo raised their family and lived the happiest years of their lives at their home on Fatima Drive in Somerset, MA. She is survived by her son, Rev. William M. Rodrigues, pastor of St. Joan of Arc Church in Orleans, MA and daughter, Ellen Marie (Rodrigues) Zontini and her husband Michael G. Zontini of Yarmouthport, MA and granddaughters, Sophia and Sarah Zontini. She also leaves behind a sister, Sheila I. Vanasse of Fall River, MA, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary was one of the warmest and sweetest people. She was a neighbor on our street. Always a smile and a wave as she drove out. Loads of chats when she walked her dog Brady. She will be missed.

Even when I was a toddler standing next to my mother, I was happy that my cousin Mary Esther was in my life.

My cousin Mary Esther always was kind to me, from the time I was a toddler. Over the years she became my big sister, and when I was around 10, I remember her letting me look through her basket of hair ribbons & wearing one of her paper flowers in my hair. Tessie accepted, encouraged and advised me. She invited me to stay in her home. Every time I visited New England, the highlight of my visit was to see her and her family. She was fun-loving with a hearty laugh and a twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes. She loved her late husband Leo and her children as well as her grand-daughters. Intelligent and well-read, she kept up on current events. I feel gratitude to know and love my dear cousin, Mary Esther, and warmth to know she loved me so very much.

My condolences to Mary's family.
I worked with Mary at theWatson School in Fall River,MA.
Mary was a good person and a good teacher. She was always concerned with the progress her students made and she worked hard with students that were struggling and advocated greatly for these students when additional help was needed.
