Oceanis Charles Lawry

On January 3, 2022, Oceanis Charles Lawry passed away surrounded by his family after a brief battle with cancer. Beneath his tough, leather jacket wearing exterior lay the most kind, caring, gentle soul. Osh was a legend, a one of a kind free spirit who touched so many in so many different ways, and his loss has left a hole in the hearts of those who loved him.

His life started in Provincetown, and he was named after the only baby that was born and survived on the Mayflower. Raised alongside his twin sister, Cirrus, their names symbolized the ocean and the sky. The family then moved to Wellfleet and eventually to Orleans, where he lived the remainder of his life.

As a young boy, he was blessed with an adventurous spirit, and his days were spent exploring the woods with friends, fishing and canoeing around Bakers Pond, and skateboarding all around town. Always a huge nature lover, he delighted in the small joys he witnessed in nature, like a turtle laying her eggs or when the wood ducks arrived every spring at the pond. He also loved beachcombing for lucky rocks along the shore. As he got older, motorcycles became his passion, and he would spend hours cruising the dirt bike trails and the Brewster pit. His house became the hangout, and many nights were spent causing mischief on the front porch with friends.

Though school was never his thing, his baking success for Orleans Elementary School craft fairs led to his future career as a chef. As the eldest son in a struggling family, Osh felt an intense need to help, and he started working in restaurants from a young age to help make ends meet for his family. Starting as a dishwasher, he quickly moved up the ranks after graduating from Nauset Regional High School, and he became a sous chef and head chef for many local restaurants, including Off the Bay Cafe, Joe’s Barley Neck Inn, Laurino’s, The Alley, The Lost Dog, and Wellfleet Marketplace. He was renowned for his specials and his ability to make a meal from a seemingly empty fridge.

Restaurant work was exhausting, but it also brought a plethora of friendships into his life. Many of his best memories were made while chatting it up with friends on a break, cracking jokes on the line, or laughing together over a shift drink. He especially loved sharing a cup of coffee before work with friends at Rock Harbor and Skaket Beach.

When he could be persuaded to take time off from work, he enjoyed traveling the world. A real-life Mad Max, road trips were his favorite, especially his multiple cross- country trips with friends. He had a way of connecting with others with a genuine heart in the present moment with no agenda, and because of this, he leaves friends all around the world with whom he has shared epic adventures through Australia, Thailand, Scotland, England and Cambodia as well as the entire United States.

Known as Uncle Osh to his niece and nephews, he imparted many life lessons to his family and friends. His integrity and generosity inspired those around him, and his kind, caring, gentle soul shared unconditional love. A bit of a crazy man, he was a force. A compassionate, loyal gentleman. Truly one-of-a-kind, his kind eyes and incredible laughter will be permanently cemented in the memories of those who loved him.

He is survived by his twin sister, Cirrus Farber, her husband Dawson Farber, and their children, Maggie, Lachlan, and Grayson. Additionally, he is survived by his sister Seneca Lawry of Hawaii, sister Talia Fagan of Oregon, and father, Lewis Davis of Provincetown as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who were like family. He is predeceased by his mother, Pamela Lawry.

Visitation will be at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA on Sunday, January 16th from 10 AM - 1 PM with a short memorial service immediately following at 1:00 PM where friends are encouraged to share memories and masks are required. Memorial donations can be made in his name to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance or to KBD Care Foundation, organizations committed to getting people screened for colon cancer at a younger age.
