

ORLEANS - Philip Thomas Scola died in his home in Orleans, MA on July 10, 2022. Phil was born on May 2, 1925 in Montclair, NJ to Nicholas and Victoria (Quadrel) Scola. As a boy, he caddied and worked odd jobs throughout the Great Depression, providing every penny to his immigrant parents all while excelling in school, especially in math and track and field. Soon after graduating high school, Phillip entered the US Army in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946. Upon his return home, he attended Rutgers University on the GI Bill, received a degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked in the field of Ocean Engineering for both the private sector and the federal government for over 40 years, culminating with an almost 20- year period at the Naval Facilities Engineering Command at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington D.C.
Philip’s passions throughout his life were, hiking, camping, skiing, skin diving and spearfishing. It was at a ski party that he met his beloved wife of 61 years, Carol (Montgomery) Scola. Together they raised a family and passed down their love of the outdoors to their children. Phil and Carol retired and moved full time to Orleans in 1993. Phil spent the next 3 decades gardening, golfing, taking trips with the Cape Cod Ski Club and volunteering his time with both the Orleans Conservation Commission and the Transfer Station Gift House.
Family was everything to Philip and he was a cherished son, brother, husband, father, uncle and grandfather. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Peter Scola and his sister Marie Morongell. His is survived by his wife Carol, sister Angelina Stephanie Vetrano, children Craig Scola and wife Deborah of Anchorage, AK, Todd Scola and wife Jennifer of Orleans, MA, and Catherine Antonio and husband Michael of Orleans, MA as well as 6 prized grandchildren.
Philip will be interned with full military honors at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts. All arrangements are private. In lieu of flowers, Phil’s loved ones encourage you to instead make a donation to the Lower Cape Outreach Council, (Donations – Lower Cape Outreach Council (lcoutreach.org)) in Phil’s memory.
