Richard Winslow Knowles age 69, of Orleans, passed away peacefully at The McCarthy Care Center on March 28, 2023 after a brief illness. Predeceased by both parents, his father Louis Winslow Knowles was born in Orleans and his Mother Elisa E. Knowles was born in La Cordillera Panama. He was also predeceased by his longtime partner Susan Swanson. He is survived by his loving sister Harriet Martin; nephews John Martin and wife Catherine, Kurt Martin and partner Lara Slifka, Niece Elisa Martin and husband Russ Bolton. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who adored him. Richard (Rick) was a graduate of the Nauset High School class of 1971. Richards first job was working at Mid Cape Center in Orleans and Dennis. In 1979 he started working for the Town of Orleans Water Department until he retired in 2014. Richard was a "true Cape Codder" and Orleans historian. He loved spending time gathering information about local people and relatives on the Lower Cape. His favorite sign when coming back from a trip off Cape was the one that said "To Cape Cod'." He also enjoyed shellfishing, fishing and spending time on his boat. You would often see Richard around town at Rock Harbor, Town Cove or having breakfast at The Homeport or Hole In One to catch up on what's going on around town. Richard's family, friends and countless others will remember his warmth and gentle nature, always willing to help anyone. A private graveside service will be held at Orleans Cemetery on Saturday April 1, 2023. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice.
