Born on February 19, 1957, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, Robert was the youngest of eight children who dedicated his life to service and family. He was a proud and unwavering MSGT (affectionately known as "Top" by his military colleagues) in the U.S. Marine Corps, retiring after 22 years of dedicated service. He carried the Marine values of honor, courage, and commitment through every facet of his life.
After retiring his uniform, Robert seamlessly transitioned to a highly accomplished civilian career that spanned security and training roles. He served as a Security Manager at critical facilities, including the Plymouth Nuclear Power Plant and the STP Nuclear Plant in South Texas. He later performed duties as a T.E.S.S. Site Manager for Lockheed Martin on Camp Pendleton, CA, and as a Site Manager for KATMAI Simulation & Training at MCB Quantico, VA. His final professional chapter brought him home to Massachusetts, where he served as the Range Coordinator for the MA ARNG on Joint Base Cape Cod, often accompanied by his signature coffee mug.
For 39 years, he shared a beautiful life and enduring love story with his beloved wife, Leslie Voegtlin. Their marriage was filled with unconditional love, laughter, and a constant, enduring bond. Robert was a steadfast presence in their home, equally comfortable commanding respect as a supervisor and earning the title of "Favorite Son-in-law."
Beyond his professional life, Robert was a man of diverse passions. He found great joy and expression in playing the trumpet, and was a true history buff, always reading to expand his knowledge. He had a profound appreciation for nature and a great love for his pets. This connection to the outdoors fueled his enjoyment of sailing on Sheep Pond, gardening with Kristen, and trap shooting with Trey. Robert was also a talented woodworker, creating treasured pieces for his family.
Robert was a cherished father to Kristen (her husband Damian) and Robert (Trey), and is also survived by three children from a previous marriage, Katy, Scott, and Erik. He was a deeply loved husband, son, friend, and mentor to many, and his greatest joy was being a grandfather.
His legacy is carried on by his beloved grandchildren: Delilah, Camden, Leah, Shea-Owen, and Chloe. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Frances Leite, his brother-in-law Robert A. Leite (his wife Kim), his sisters Leslie Wright (her husband Kent) and Valerie Steward (her husband Paul), along with many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Voegtlin, his mother, Mary (Pettengill) Voegtlin, his father-in-law, Robert G. Leite, and his nephew, Andrew Steward.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to his team at Continuum Hospice for their compassionate care, which provided comfort and dignity during his final days.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Nickerson Funeral Home, Orleans, MA on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 1:00 PM. The family invites all who knew him to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Animal Rescue League of Brewster or the Cape Cod Alzheimer's Family Support Center.
