Roger James Cross
November 6, 1923 – January 5, 2019
Roger James Cross of Orleans, passed away on January 5, 2019 at 95 years of age. Roger is survived by Dorothy, his loving wife of 70 years, two sons; Roger Cross Jr. and wife Anne of Orleans, David Cross of Carlsbad, CA, two grandsons and their spouses, Matthew Cross and Carey London, Kevin Cross and Heather Smith and granddaughter Katie and her husband Aaron Freeman. Roger was born on November 6, 1923 in Marlborough, Mass. He was one of eight children, seven boys and one girl! The Cross family moved to Worcester Mass where he graduated from South High in 1941. Roger attended college for one semester before being drafted into the Army in April, 1943. After a brief time in Britain, he entered Europe at Omaha Beach on June 10th, and as a part of the 1st division, 1st army they liberated Paris, went on to Belgium for the breakthrough and finished the war in Stuttgart, Germany, ending his service in November, 1945. Upon returning to Worcester, Roger graduated from BU in January 1946, and took a job with Stanley Tools in New Britain, CT. He married the love of his life, Dorothy B Rouse on November 6th, 1948, his 25th birthday so he’d never forget an anniversary! Roger’s career in Sales and Marketing took the young couple to many places from coast to coast. Roger and Dorothy retired to Orleans in 1986, where he was active in many organizations; the Orleans Planning Board, Rotary, he helped establish Pops in the Park and enjoyed a second career as a local realtor. Roger or as he was more affectionately known as “Pop” loved his three grandchildren. They spent many summers with Pop and Nana, enjoying all Cape Cod had to offer and had the opportunity to know the joys of sailing at the Orleans Yacht Club. Roger and Dorothy were faithful members of the Church of the Holy Spirit. He served on the vestry, co-chaired the committee responsible for the restoration and expansion of the church and was a steadfast volunteer always. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Holy Spirit on March 30, 2019, at 11:00 AM. A reception to follow in the Church hall.
