Sally Howard Moore

Born in Boston on April 5, 1932, to Willard and Darthea (Bryant) Howard, Sally was raised in Wellesley, MA and graduated from Garland Junior College where she majored in merchandising. She worked at Priscilla of Boston on Newbury Street in Boston for three years before moving to Cape Cod in 1957 newly married to Bill Moore. They raised three daughters in East Orleans where she was active in her girls’ activities – Girl Scouts, Sunday school at the Federated Church of Orleans, the Junior Sailing Program at Orleans Yacht Club, and parent committees at their schools. She attended all their sporting events, recitals, and plays.

Sally was active in sailboat racing at the Orleans Yacht Club while married to Bill and was his crew when they won the Day Sailer North American Championship in 1967 in Ohio. They continued to compete in other locations across the US in the years following – often placing in the top five. She was an excellent crew. Sally also worked with Bill in organizing large events at OYC, including the Bicentennial Bathtub Race and numerous other social events.

Her life took a big turn when she found herself single in mid-life and it was then that she started pursuing her passions. In 1988 she graduated from the Florida School of Massage and practiced as a licensed massage therapist in New Bern, NC and Alpharetta, GA. She became a craniosacral therapist, a Reiki master, and tai chi instructor. Sally found meaning when volunteering her skills to benefit cancer patients.

Dancing brought her joy. She square-danced, line-danced, and won multiple blue ribbons in ballroom dance competitions.

Sally retired to Orleans in 2013 to be close to her daughter Carol who cared for her lovingly until the end of her life.

Sally leaves behind three daughters, Diane Dodge (Brad) of Alpharetta, GA and East Orleans, Susan Moore (John Mix) of Washington DC, Carol Penfield (David) of Port Saint Lucie, FL, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a sister, Barbara Howard of Harwich. Sally was pre-deceased by her brother, Fred Howard. She enjoyed time spent with her nieces and nephews over the years, particularly during the holidays.

Visiting hours will be held at Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans on October 17, 2026, from 2 to 4 pm.
