Susan Arnold Edwards

September 9, 1933September 22, 2021

Edwards, Susan Arnold (Edwards) of Orleans, MA, passed away on September 22, 2021, twelve days after her 89th birthday. She was the dear daughter of the late Foster and Madeline (Stevens) Edwards and the loving sister of Steven Edwards of Falls Church, VA.

After graduating from Hingham High School in Hingham, Massachusetts, she expanded her lifelong passion of learning by earning her Bachelors of Science degree in education at Russell Sage College in Troy, NY, class of 1955. Susan returned to Russell Sage College, to work with in admissions assisting and mentoring young women as they navigated their college education through the 1970’s. Later, she then was given the opportunity to become the Director of Admissions at Emma Willard School in Troy, NY, soon becoming an integral part of the elite prep school for girls. Susan enjoyed many years of her career after as Head of the Brimmer and May School in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts which was her ultimate and most important career position. After Susan left Brimmer May she leaned toward retirement, but the Lincoln School in Providence, RI badly wanted her as College Placement Dean and even offered a small cottage as on campus "quarters". She accepted and thoroughly enjoyed her last teaching years there. It lasted quite a few years and when the "school head" retired she also left for the Cape and full retirement.

Susan retired to Orleans, where she enjoyed the sound of the waves at Nauset Beach and the beautiful sunsets of Skaket Beach. She kept herself busy volunteering at the Hope Chest and the Hidden Gem in Orleans, MA, spending many hours with good friends and a glass of wine or a quiet Sunday morning with a crossword puzzle and an afternoon Patriot's game. She will be remembered for her poise, sparkling blue eyes, her love of boxer dogs, and her owls who were her good luck charms. She will be missed by all who knew her. Susan leaves behind her brother Capt. Steven H. Edwards and wife Lois in Falls Church, VA: nephews Randall H. Edwards, wife Apryl and children Foster and Wilder in Canton, GA, and Scott A. Edwards, Jamie Edwards and children Seaton and Baila in Cumming, GA.

What an amazing role model Susan was for Sage students. She was so impressive during her conversation with my father during my admissions interview that it sealed the deal. She selected me to serve as a tour guide in admissions as a freshman that opportunity was a highlight of my time at Sage. She exemplified intelligence, poise and personal strength that served as a touchstone for my professional life. Everytime I think of her I will smile and thank her over and over again.

Dear Steve,
I will miss Susan. We were first neighbors at Center Place, then when she moved to the nearby condo, we spent time volunteering at the consignment store Anne Kiefer managed and sunning at Skaket Beach. Finally, after I stopped summering on the beloved Cape Cod we spoke regularly, usually every other Sunday and caught up with what was going on in our lives. As I said, I will miss Susan.
My sympathy to you and your family. She is surely a loss to you.

SO shocked to see this! Susan Edwards is why I came to Sage. My Mom and I fell in love with her and Russell Sage on our tour. While she was on campus, every time I saw her she always remembered me and ask about my Mom.
Susan was a precious and wonderful person.

Her family has my condolences.

I remember Miss Edwards so well! She was my first introduction to RSC and I think meeting her really helped to make my decision to apply and accept. She made an impact on me.

Rest in peace, Ms. Edwards, knowing how many of us from Russell Sage College will always remember you so well from our splendid admissions interviews with you--kind but highly professional--and your inspiring presence on campus.

Susan, certainly did positively shape our futures, as Sally said!
Susan, Class of ‘57 at Russell Sage College, gave us all the opportunity and privilege to grow and learn together! I will be forever grateful.

Miss Edwards was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside! Those of us who attended Sage in the 60’s were always impressed by her smile and kindness!
