Thomas, (Tom), brother and friend, died peacefully in his Eastham home after a hard-fought battle with metastatic cancer. He was 73.
Tom was born in Hartford, CT to parents Walter Murzyn and Kirsten (Klepp) Murzyn. He was the oldest of their 5 children and grew up in rural Barkhamsted, CT on the family’s growing greenhouse and nursery business (Hilltop Nursery). Most summers were enjoyed on Cape Cod, in Wellfleet or Truro.
Tom graduated from Northwestern Regional #7 High School in Winsted, CT and went on to earn a degree in Civil Engineering at Hartford State Technical College. He had a long and successful career as a land surveyor working with Schofield Brothers in Orleans, Nickerson & Berger/Coastal Engineering in Orleans, Terry Eldridge Engineering in Chatham, and Nantucket Surveyors in Nantucket. Tom earned his Building Contractor License and most recently worked as a General Contractor and Landscape Designer. He helped many friends and family members by surveying their properties and designing landscape features. A special service he provided was surveying local shell fisherman's grants in Wellfleet Harbor.
A friend of Bill W., he helped many on their way to sobriety.
Tom was an avid automobile historian and loved everything cars, especially racing and design. Every fall he attended The Lime Rock Race Track in CT where he once raced his spiffed up BMW on the track. Besides cars, he enjoyed vacationing in Maine, skiing (he worked at Ski Sundown while attending college), football, reading, completing a daily crossword puzzle, and cooking. He made the best clams casino and linguini with clam sauce.
Tom is survived by brothers Paul Murzyn (MaryEllen), and Michael Murzyn (Cheryl) of Eastham, MA, sisters Kristina (Nina) Eschenheimer (Jesse) of Newport, RI, and Nancy Murzyn of Orleans, MA., 2 adoring nieces, Nora Eschenheimer (Jesse), and Morgan Eschenheimer of Newport, RI., along with other loved family members here and in Norway, and many true friends.
Tom will be missed by all.
A celebration of Tom’s full life will be held on September 14th, from 12 to 3pm at The Wellfleet Methodist Church, 246 Main Street, Wellfleet, MA. All are invited to attend. Burial will be private.
