Alfred Webb, Jr. “June” or “Big Al,” 86, of Holly Hill, FL, passed away on August 23, 2017 surrounded by family and devoted friends. He was the husband of Irene Webb, celebrating 65 years of marriage together this past July. He was born January 13, 1931, in Borderland, WV, to the late Alfred Webb, Sr. and Sarah Barton Webb. He will be remembered most for his gift of storytelling and his immense love for family and friends. He was loved and adored as “Pawpaw” by many, young and old. Pawpaw was legendary in his unconditional love for his grandchildren, great grandchildren and all who crossed his path. Those who knew him were blessed by his fierce generosity, brilliant blue eyes, crooked grin, and his deep faith in the Lord.
He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. He served his country from 1951 – 1954 on the frontlines in Korea – 38th Parallel – as a Radio Operator and Communications Dispatcher for his company commander; devoting eleven months, eleven days. He returned to Fort Knox, KY, in 1952, and married his beloved wife Irene Smith. He continued his service until 1954, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant, where he managed Rifle Infantry and Combat Training for troops being sent to Korea and Vietnam.
Following an Honorable discharge, in 1954, he returned home to Kentucky to start a family; and worked in the coal mines until relocating to Mobile, Alabama in 1960. It was there he learned the trade of automobile body work and repair, which led him to Daytona Beach, FL, in 1965, to establish Fact-O-Bake of Daytona with his family. He went on, later, to establish Al Webb’s Fact-O-Bake, a thriving local business still serving our community to this day.
It was here on the Florida coastline where he developed his love for deep sea fishing. He loved sharing his catch, establishing the long held tradition of Webb Family Fish Fries.
He was a member of Flomich Baptist Church, Holly Hill, FL, and attended Lower Rock Lick Enterprise Baptist Church when tending to his farm in Hillsboro, KY.
He was a 32nd degree Freemason, Past Master and proud member of Daytona Beach Masonic Lodge 270; also serving as a member of the Bahia Shriners in Orlando.
He retired at the age of 70, spending time at his farm in Hillsborough, KY, where he raised cattle and worked hard tending the fields up until his passing. He loved nothing more than sharing his land with his friends and family, to reconnect with nature and with one another.
He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Irene Webb; six children - Clyde Webb, Ormond Beach; Darlene Hinton (John), Ponce Inlet; Jim Webb, Ormond Beach; Sharon Dunlap (John), Ormond Beach; Charlotte Bowman (Butch) Daytona Beach; Michael Webb (Stephanie) DeLand- 12 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He is survived by 4 siblings – Beatrice Combs (FL), Betty Jean Carey (MI), Mary Lou Parsons (IN), and Bob Webb (KY) – and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by the rest of his siblings – Curtis Webb, Clyde Webb, Margaret Austin, Nellie Hogan, and Chester Webb, Sr.
Our family would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the staff at Halifax Health Hospice of Ormond Beach. Words cannot express the peace and comfort you all provided our family. Our hearts will forever be broken, but we are at peace knowing he is now with our Heavenly Father.
