A wake for Dorothy will be held Thursday, June 20, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home – Ormond Beach, 548 N Nova Road, Ormond Beach, FL 32174. Mass of Christian Burial will occur Friday, June 21, 2024, at 11:00 am at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 600 S Nova Rd, Ormond Beach, FL 32174. Burial will follow at Volusia Memorial Park, 550 N Nova Rd, Ormond Beach FL 32174. A Celebration of Life reception will be held after the burial on Friday, June 21, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home – Ormond Beach, 548 N Nova Road, Ormond Beach, FL 32174.
Dorothy was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, to Edward and Mary Butler and always excelled in school. She received an academic scholarship and graduated in 1944 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, with honors, from Albertus Magnus College, a Catholic girl’s college in New Haven, Connecticut. Dorothy was the editor of the college newspaper, a member of the yearbook editorial staff and active in several associations. Upon graduation, Dorothy served as a research assistant at Yale University Medical School; New Haven, Connecticut.
Dorothy and Matthew Hyland came to Daytona Beach in 1954. Dorothy began her career working for the Florida Department of Welfare. Dorothy received her Master of Arts in Education degree from Stetson University in 1970 and was a high school teacher and eventual Department chair. Dorothy taught and served in education from 1964 to 1989 at both Father Lopez High School and Mainland Senior High School.
Mrs. Hyland was an active and engaged community member and leader. Dorothy served as President of the Board of the Heart of Volusia and was a member for 32 years. She served as President and Secretary for the Volusia County Retired Teachers Association, President of the Fidelis Chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, and member of the Science Council of the Volusia County Board of Education. Dorothy was instrumental in growing Science education and led the organization of the first regional science fair in Volusia County and established the first chapter of the Academy of Scientists.
Growing up, her children were active and award-winning swimmers, and Dorothy and Matt served their children’s team. Dorothy was a Swim Meet Manager for the Daytona Beach Swim Association (DBSA) and Matt was a swim meet starter. In retirement, Dorothy was a volunteer for Hurst Elementary School, Hospice of Volusia/Flagler County and Meals on Wheels. Dorothy was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, and in her later years, Prince of Peace Catholic Church.
Mrs. Hyland was a beloved and honored teacher by her peers, students, families and community members. She was recognized as: Father Lopez High School Teacher of the Year (1967), ) Florida Science Teacher of the Year (1975), Most Cooperative Faculty Member (1977), Leader in Nurturing Science, Westinghouse Talent Search, Most Cooperative Faculty Member (1977), Most Dependable Mainland Buccaneer (1979), School Board Teacher of the Year (1981), Mainland High School Outstanding Teacher (1983), Mainland High School Teacher of the Year (1985), Florida Foundation for Future Scientists, Outstanding Contributor to Student Success(1986), Mainland High School Florida Science Teacher of the Year (1987), and recognized as the Volusia County School Board Member Most Dedicated to Service (1989).
Over the many years Mrs. Hyland taught and influenced thousands of student’s lives and many stayed connected to her throughout her long life. She was visited in person and through letters by many of her former students, colleagues and friends.
The accomplishments, contributions and commitments of her children and grandchildren filled her with enormous pride and joy. Her six children went on in life to serve with honors in the United States Military, the Department of Defense, the Healthcare profession, Technology and Security profession, the Non-Profit sector and, like her, in the Education field. Dorothy loved, and was proud of her family, beyond measure.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Matthew (1994), her parents Edward and Mary Butler, and her brother, Edward Butler. She is survived by her six children: Brian (Holly Hill), Darah (Port Orange), Edward (Ormond Beach), Kathleen (Joe-Ponte Vedra), Patrick (Gloria- St. Johns), Maureen (Boynton Beach); four grandchildren – Christopher (Alexandra-London, UK), Matthew (Danielle-Boynton Beach), Mason (Boynton Beach), Madison (Jacksonville) and three great grandchildren -- Cash Jacob and Easton James (Matt and Dani Chamberlin) and Arabella Jade (Chris and Alex Chamberlin).
