Elizabeth “Liz” Catherine Sacchet, 85, of Palm Beach Gardens, passed away on November 2nd, 2023 in Ormond Beach, FL. She is remembered by her family for her interest in their lives and introducing them to international foods and travel. Liz was born in Astoria, NY on July 10, 1938 to Francis Paolo and Elisabetta (Stabile) Priore, both of Polla, Italy. Her earlier years were influenced by her family’s electrical repair business on Steinway Street in Astoria and vacations in the family’s summer home in Huntington Beach.
Liz and her family moved to Miami, FL in the late 1940s. She attended Citrus Grove Jr. High School and Miami Senior High School. Liz went on to attend Florida State University and received a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1960. That Fall, Liz began her teaching career at Citrus Grove Jr. High. She taught seventh, eighth, and ninth graders in English, History, and Geography. She liked students who had good conduct, were courteous, and enthusiastic. She disliked rudeness and disrespectfulness of any sort in her students.
Liz had her own spark for adventure, shown in her love for traveling. By the time she was 26, she had been to England, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, and Liechtenstein. Liz also enjoyed reading.
In the early 1970s, Liz moved to Naples, Italy to teach students on the U.S. Navy Base. She traveled back and forth regularly to visit family in Polla. When she purchased a Fiat 500, she had to go to the U.S. Consulate in Naples to register the car. It was there that she met her future husband, Edward “Ed" Sacchet. In June of 1975, they wed in Rome. Liz, ever the consummate planner, assisted Ed with diplomatic duties in Italy, France, and Washington, D.C., executing various events and dinners. They retired to Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
Liz joins Ed, her husband and soulmate, as well as her parents in heaven. She is survived by her sister-in-law Frances (Sacchet) Petrillo of Silver Spring, MD; her nephews, James Gregory Scull of Ormond Beach, FL and Peter Brian Scull of Silver Spring, MD, along with their families; and many Priore cousins and relatives in the U.S. and Italy.
A viewing will be held for Liz on November 16 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, Ormond Beach, FL. Mass will be held on November 17 at 10 a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Ormond Beach with interment immediately following at Volusia Memorial Gardens. She will be laid to rest with her husband.
