Joy was born in the Australian Outback of Queensland, in the small town of Mitchell, on July 15, 1928 to Herbert Moses James and Agnes Emma Marjorie Collins. She attended many schools as her father frequently transferred. In 1943 she got her first position as a milk tester for the South Coast Dairy
Company in Southport Queensland. Several years later she was employed by the Australian Government and in January 1948 appointed to the position of post-mistress in Madang, Papua New Guinea.
At the end of WWII, May 1945, Joy met her future husband, James Seyfried, while he was serving as the radio operator on General Douglas MacArthur’s plane. After James’s return they corresponded by Aerogram until November 1948, when Joy accepted James’s proposal for marriage and arranged flights to America. They were married on January 23, 1949 in New York. Joy worked as an admissions officer for several Long Island hospitals, supplementing Jim’s earnings with Hartz Mountain. They both retired in 1987 to their Daytona Beach, FL, home. She was proud of her Australian roots and was an active member in the Australian Club and World War II Brides Association. Joy loved her creative side. Her favorite hobbies included cooking, sewing, gardening, needle point, rug hooking, decoupage, cards, scrabble, painting, and decorating. For the next twenty-two years, they enjoyed international travel with the Friendship Force Exchange Program.
After James’s passing in 2009, Joy moved to independent living at Bishops Glen Retirement community in Holly Hill making new friends and sharing happy times.
Joy is pre-deceased by her parents, husband James, and son Curtis. Survived by her daughter Jill (Bruce), NY and daughter Sally Anne (Joe), NY, and grand-daughters Stephanie (Marshall), and Stacey, and great-grandchild Roman.
The family will hold a memorial service on Friday October 27, 11:30 am at Long Island National Cemetery, NY, where she will be laid to rest with her husband. All are welcome.
