Marilyn was born in Camden, NJ on June 5th, 1925 to parents Charles Henry Yost and Grace Moore Yost. She had one brother, John H. Yost, who predeceased Marilyn in 1987. She grew up in Riverton, NJ and went to college at Beaver College (now Arcadia University) majoring in Science and Home Economics.
Marilyn married the boy next door, John Merchant Burhoe, on June 22, 1946 and started her married life in Seymour, CT where she started the first school lunch program in two elementary schools providing healthy lunches for all the school children while John completed his degree at Norwich University. In 1948, they moved to Beaumont, TX where she worked for Gulf State Utilities as a Home Service Advisor. John was called back into service with the Army and remained active military for 28 years. As a service wife, Marilyn lived in Japan, Germany and all over the US while raising her family. She entered real estate in 1961 in Alexandria, VA after graduating from the University of Virginia with a GRI designation. After living in Newport News, VA and working in real estate for Libby Bloxom, Inc. for 11 years, Marilyn and John moved to Florida where Marilyn continued her real estate career with Adams Cameron Real Estate for 25 years while also preparing taxes H&R Block for 34 years.
She was active locally in the Florida International Festival Guild, Museum of Arts and Sciences Guild, Eastern Star, AARP, and Retired Officers MOAA Club. Marilyn was a regular volunteer at the Florida Memorial Hospital, Ormond Beach Senior Olympics and Christ Presbyterian Church.
Known affectionately as Mutti to her three children, Cynthia B. Thomashow, Dr. Steven A. Burhoe and Admiral J. Scott Burhoe and their spouses Mitchell, Chris and Betsy, she also leaves behind a loving family of six grandchildren, Jessica and Jacob Thomashow, Devon and Morgan Burhoe, and Aaron Burhoe and Amy (Burhoe) Moore and six great-grandchildren James and Emily Burhoe, Juniper and Maisie Thomashow Larson, and John and Lauren Moore.
Marilyn has been blessed with many friends who have added happiness throughout her life. One in particular, Joan, has been very important in her life as her travel companion and close confidant for the last two decades and deserves special mention for all the support she has given to Marilyn.
