Russell was born in Marietta, Ohio 11/25/1932. He and his wife moved to Daytona Beach in 1955 from Parkersburg, W. Virginia to help his parents run the Candlelight Lodge. Later he bought the Toms Peanut Distributorship for Volusia County and sold Toms products for 30 years. Russell also owned the roving ice cream truck on Ormond Beach for 15 years.
Russell was best known as Scoutmaster of Troop 65 for 37 years. He spent 50 years in Scouting helping many boys, always looking out for the boy that needed help in life, Scouting was his life. He received many Scouting awards, Silver Beaver, Good Shepard, Presidents Award and February 10th, 1994 was proclaimed as Russell Barnhart Day in Daytona Beach when he retired from Scouting.
After retirement he and his wife spent 6 months each year for 13 years working as car attendant and show conductor on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad in Bryson City, NC. The Barnhart’s moved to Lexington, NC to be near their youngest son Russ due to health reasons.
Russell is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Lou, three children, Terri Lou Adams/Phillip of Tallahassee, Fl, Rick Barnhart/Marcy of Montgomery, AL, and Russ Barnhart/Kim, of Lexington, NC, 6 Grandchildren and 6 Great-Grandchildren.
The Funeral Services will be held at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, Nova Road, Ormond Beach. The viewing and visitation will be held Friday, April 19th from 4pm-7pm and Saturday, April 20th from 9am-10am. and the Service will be Saturday, April 20th at 10am with a reception following
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Russell Barnhart’s memory to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292 or Central Baptist Church, Daytona Beach.
