Theodore Walton West

Ted was born on May 11, 1938, in Ridgetop, Tennessee, to Luther “Sam” West and Ruth Pentecost West. He graduated from Greenbrier High School in 1956 and later attended Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee.

While working at Harvey’s Department Store in Nashville, Ted married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Nunley, on October 3, 1959, in Old Hickory, Tennessee. In November of that same year, he accepted a position as a management trainee with the J. C. Penney Company in Madison, Tennessee.

Ted’s 45-year career with J. C. Penney took the family to several communities as he advanced through the company’s management program. Following his first transfer to Raleigh, North Carolina, he went on to manage larger stores in Lumberton, North Carolina, and Louisville, Kentucky. The family later returned south to Atlanta, where Ted served on the district staff before being promoted to manage the J. C. Penney store at Volusia Mall in Daytona Beach, Florida.
