Aldis was born in Toronto, Ontario to Vija and Alfons Abolins on April 17, 1957, proud of the Latvian heritage his family carried with them. Graduating from Queen's University with an Engineering Degree, Aldis married Ilze on November 22, 1986 in Toronto, Ontario.
A lifelong farmer and engineer, Aldis had a rare ability; he could look at a forgotten field or building, a broken-down machine, or an impossible situation and see not what was, but what could be. He believed in the possibility of things, and he had the stubbornness and sheer determination to never doubt those possibilities.
Steadfast and immovable, he was, by most accounts, the toughest and most stubborn person his friends and family knew. His groan-worthy humour was infamous; relentless and delivered with complete confidence. He never tired of his own wit, even when everyone around him did. His hard-headedness and soft heart made him truly one of a kind and kept everyone around him on their toes.
Aldis is survived by his wife, Ilze, his two daughters, Mara (Michael) and Nora (Laura), his brother, Agris, and many aunts and cousins.
The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the Lakeridge Oshawa Hospital and to the Durham Region Paramedic Service.
Respecting Aldis's final wishes, the family will not be arranging any final services.
