Dear Cathy and family,

Hard to express how sad we feel for the devastating loss of your husband, father and grandpa.  The last couple years have been filled with so many difficult times for you all, but most certainly with many precious moments as well.  We pray that the beautiful memories and happy times that we see so vividly portrayed in these photos ultimately prevail, as God's love and time help heal your broken hearts.  No more suffering for Harry, only unspeakable joy.  You will be in our thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.

To Cathy and family.  I am so very saddened to hear of the passing of Harry.  He was a genuinely beautiful man.  I will forever have a little smile when I think of the times that were had as a neighbor for so many years on Falstaff Crescent.  Thank you for the memories.

When informed of Harry's passing I felt great sadness.  I had the pleasure of being a friend and teammate of Harry's at York University.  He was always entertaining and a pleasure to be with.
 
Harry and I spent one memorable New Year's weekend in Montreal in the mid 1970s and a number of us went to Myrtle Beach for a two week golfing vacation in 1977.  

Although I had not seen Harry for years, he will always be regarded as a dear friend. 

Anyone who knew Harry was better off for having known him.

To Harry's family:
I was out of the country at the time of Harry's passing and I am sorry I was unable to attend his services to personally extend my condolences. 
I didn't know Harry for all that long, our relationship was mainly about hockey, but Harry had a genuine warmth of spirit and camaraderie that put every one at ease.   He was able to extend an aura of comfort and openness to each of the crotchety bunch of ol' guys sitting around a hockey dressing room and make us all a little better.

Dear Cathy, Stephan, Jeff, Emily and family, We are so sorry for the loss of your beloved Harry. I remember Harry as so chill ,very funny with a dry wit , always smiling. Living in Chicago, we didn't get to see enough of Harry but in the later years, we managed to see him at some family reunions , time spent at a cottage you rented and a wedding in Chicago. We knew our cousin Cathy was married to a great guy :)  It has been wonderful to learn more about his great life and what an inspiration he was to so many. Such a character he was too .... from standing on a chair to teach a Ceasar lesson to laying on the floor before class to do his physiotherapy exercises. Mr. Hass brought a lot of passion when teaching English. Condolences on his passing. He will always be fondly remembered.

If the value of someone's life is measured by the impact he has made on the lives of others, Harry's life was priceless.  He was a visionary, always searching for new ways to teach every student, regardless of their limitations.  He embraced new educational theories and brought them to life (for both students and staff) right up until the day he retired.  He shared his contagious, positive, enthusiastic spirit with an unforgettable impish grin.  I loved listening to his humorous stories, and valued his insight and wisdom.  I was blessed to have taught with such a humble, accepting, warm soul.  His memory will always be in my heart.  Cathy, Stefan, Jeff and Emily... I am so sorry for your loss.

Harry - a loving soul. I will miss his warmth, his kindness, his humour, his generosity and his sense of joy. He was a gentle and unique spirit. He radiated goodness. He welcomed all. He was the definition of a true friend. Loved and respected by so many, he was feared too - by fish and goalies. A teacher to the last, I will  remember the life lessons he taught. Sleep well my brother.

Uncle Harry was always such a passionate guy. I remember him as always being a loving, kind , patient and fun guy. As children he was always playing with us and having fun...and as we had our own children it was so wonderful to see him make connections with the next generation.
You could see how proud he was of his family.  How much he adored you all, and the beautiful life you had together.  
The service today was so touching.  It was amazing to see how many people had been impacted by one man. 
Sending everyone as much love and strength as we have to offer. Our hearts are with you all. 
Try to hold on to all of the wonderful memories you have of him and he will live on in the stories and pictures ( and our hearts ) forever.

I had the very good fortune to arrive at Pereyma in '91, the same fall as Harry. I had no idea how fortunate I was. Our visits to Canada have grown more rare in adulthood, but when I think of Harry he was kind, gentle, a great listener because he cared for others, and he had that infectious smile.  I only wish he could have enjoyed retirement with such an awesome wife.  As an ol' Irish blessing says, "May the road to hell be green for want of his footsteps."  Harry, rest in peace in His presence...you will surely be missed down here.

I was so very sorry to learn of Harry's death.  Before my retirement, Harry and I served on the English Curriculum Council of our school board.  He was a wonderful colleague - kind, funny and so helpful.  In those years I also learned what an amazing teacher he was; he always puts his students first.  I want you to know I will be praying for all of you as you try to deal with this tragic loss.  God bless.

Mr.Hass was a great teacher and role model. "The Hass" always had a story and a reason for each and every lesson, you couldn't get through a class without cracking a smile at a story, or at least chuckling at another one of his hockey analogies. He will be missed by many, and never forgotten.

My condolences to the Hass family for your loss.  I worked with Harry at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the English Department.  My memories of him are so warm.   He was a kind and gentle man.a committed educator who always had a smile on his lips and a good word for everyone.  Eternal rest grant onto him, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him.

My first year of teaching was at Mount Carmel in 1989.  It was a tough year.  Harry was always there to listen and lend support.  Such a kind and humble man.

Mr. Hass as he was known to his fellow students aka Hassman was one of the greatest teachers I ever had. To me Mr. Hass didn't just teach me about English, he taught us about life through his stories and personal experiences. Mr. Hass was one of few teachers that I ever had that genuinely cared for his students. He not only wanted us to be successful in the classroom but also in life. Mr. Hass definitely had a passion for teaching however I felt he had a greater passion for helping people. 

One of the many things I really admired about the Hassman, was his adoration and unconditional love for his family, specifically his children. He talked about them on many occasions and would often times share many stories about his family. When I saw him last in 2009, he conveyed to me how proud he was of all his children. 

Despite Mr. Hass not being here on this earth with us, his legacy will be etch in the minds and hearts of many because he surely touched encouraged and even inspired many people during his time on this earth. What an honour it was to know you as a teacher and what a greater honour it was to know you as a mentor. You have influenced many lives without them even knowing it.

I met Harry in my first year of teaching at Our Lady of Mt Carmel S. S. I had the pleasure of teaching and coaching cross country running with Harry. He was such a warm and generous man and a delight to coach with!

Mr. Harry Hass was a creative soul that leaves a pretty big imprint on those blessed to know him, and learn from him. Whether it was from the top of his desk, or underneath it, he taught with a passion and zest like no other. As a teacher, he was passionate, quirky, creative, hilarious, a man of faith, and brilliant. He pushed his students. He expected a lot. But it was because he believed that they had it in them. He wanted each of us to allow the creative spirits within us to soar. I still regret not taking Writer's Craft to this day, when he told me, You have a gift. Use it. 

My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time. Cancer is a heavy cross to bear, but if I know Hass-man, he carried it with courage, strength, faith, humour, and a whole lot of sass. There's just stuff people do It's love. I love people so much I'm fit to bust, sometimes (John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath)  And that stuff that he did he did it well. And he loves people so much damn much, he probably will bust. He fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith... right until that final period. God's got him.

Harry was my first department head when I began my teaching career in this province. I could not have asked for a more gentle, sweet, and loving man to guide me along the way. Teaching can be a lonely endeavor; fraught with self-doubt and second guessing. Harry was always there to tell you that you were doing well, to offer help in areas where you were struggling, and to make you laugh when you really needed to. I, Karl J Bos, am very sorry to see something happen to such a great man.  Mr. Hass was my very first mentor in life as he knew my determination and had belief in me succeeding.  Mr. Hass gave me the strength to put my goals in action, as I thank him for my amazing life.

Mr. Hass was one of the most charismatic teachers I have ever had the privilege of knowing. He taught with passion and spirit and put meaning into every word of prose or literature he brought to his students. I will forever remember him standing on a desk to teach us Julius Ceasar and telling us that we had to live the play in order to understand it. Mr. Hass was one of my favourite and one of the best teachers at Pereyma. I have a lot of fond memories of him, from Writer's Craft class to "carbo-loads" before a cross country meet. He always went above and beyond for his students. I am very sorry to hear the news. My condolences to Cathy, his children and grandchildren.

Cathy, Stefan, Jeff and Emily: I'm so sorry for your loss. Harry was an inspiring example and mentor and a compassionate and passionate teacher. I feel privileged for knowing him and working with him. It's hard to imagine the world without him in it.

Mr. Hass was the best kind of teacher. Knowledgable, funny, helpful, and passionate. King Lear is my favourite Shakespeare play because of how he taught it in Grade 12 English.

I still have some of the creative writing I did in his class ten years ago, and I'm so appreciative of the fact that he took the time to actually read and provide genuine feedback on what we wrote.

Cathy, Stefan, Jeff and Emily, my sincere condolences to you. Harry was a brilliant teacher and an inspiration to so many. He made everyone around him, staff and students, believe they were important and gave them the confidence every day to believe in themselves. So sad to hear the news about Mr Hass. He was such a genuinely lovely person and one of my favourite teachers at Pereyma. My sisters and I were just telling stories at Christmas of his quirky teaching style and his wonderful readings of Shakespeare. He will be truly missed by all in our family.

First & foremost I give my deepest condolances to Harold's family..Mr. Hass was the definition of unique; I havn't met another person who had the same level of charisma as he did. Mr. Hass played a huge role in my character development while I was attending Msgr. John Pereyma Secondary; through his teaching style he's taught me that there's no such thing as small steps. By appearance a small step might just be nothing more than that.. But beyond that is a fusion of multiple factors that ultimately influence people to make the choices that they do. With everything. Most importantly, Mr Hass made me realize that's being yourself and doing things that truly make you happy is the most important key to success as it builds the foundation to create a legacy for yourself. He was more than just a teacher; he helped me overcome a lot of challenges and is forever going to be one of the most influential people I've ever met in my life. I'm extremely thankful that I had the opportunity to be one of his pupils.

So sorry to hear about the passing of my former teacher, Mr Hass.  He inspired so many of us in our learning and our faith.

Mr. Hass never taught me at Pereyma, but we talked all the time between classes since his English class was right before my math class in the same room. I'd always show him drawings of characters I made up, and he was one of the only people who listened to the stories I made for each character, and he always encouraged me to continue them. I always appreciated his encouragements, and he was simply a joy to talk to. My condolences to his family, he was truly a great man.

I am so very blessed to have had such an amazing mentor, colleague, 'at school dad', and most of all, friend. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Cathy and family there are no words I can express here that remotely resemble how I or you are feeling. The lose is monumental to us all and especially to you and your family. I was so very blessed to know Harry. I remember when I met him 10 years ago when he was part of the hiring group that interviewed me. He believed in me as a teacher and felt I was a perfect match for Pereyma. He always made me strive to become better and remain compassionate. I remember his last day at Pereyma upon retirement; he came into my room at 7pm with his box of memorabilia and was saying his goodbye and asked if he could give me some advice. Harry said "Ann don't work so hard and take time for you. Go home earlier in the day and don't take on so much" Harry I think believed I worked too much..It was not until a few months later that those words resonated in me and I kept hearing him repeat them in my mind. Well I listened to him as he was always far wiser then I and most. I will miss him dearly but I will take the lessons he taught me and the advice to heart. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Harry was one of the best teachers I was privileged to work with.  He was a man of great integrity who truly exemplified what it meant to minister to the needs of students.  Those who knew him came to love  and respect him.  May God bless Harry with  eternal and everlasing peace!

Harry and I began teaching at Pereyma on the same day way back in 1991. He has been an inspiration to me my entire career and I will always be so grateful that I had the opportunity to know, work with, and learn from such a great man.  He will forever be in my heart, and a part of our Pereyma family.

Cathy, Stefan, Jeffrey and Emily - I cannot know how much he must have meant to you. Words alone cannot express what he meant to us. There will never be another Harry!  He was a joy! God be with you! We will keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers... Beth Hawkins
