Loving father of Brian (Holly) and Stephanie Summers (Cameron). Cherished and devoted Papa to Owen, Aidan, and Emma. Dear brother of Gail Moores (David), Carolynn Duffy Scott (John), and Kenneth (Mona). Will be missed by his many nieces and nephews.
John earned his BA in Political Science and Economics at the University of Toronto, Trinity College (’65). He began his career at Clarkson Gordon where he earned his Chartered Accountant designation (’69). Throughout his career John held multiple positions in finance, including as chief financial officer, in the food services and restaurant industry. He capped off his career as co-owner and CFO of Neate Roller Ltd.
Over the years, John has participated in several community activities in Whitby, including establishing the 9th Whitby Beaver Group in the late 1970s, serving on multiple town boards and advisory committees including Whitby Groveside Municipal Cemetery. One of John’s most notable achievements for the Town is during his time on the Whitby Public Library Board and the building of the now current library, officially opened in the Town of Whitby’s sesquicentennial year of 2005. If you visit the library, you can find John’s name on the commemorative plaque.
Involved in politics for 60 years, John dedicated his time as an official agent/CFO, campaign manager and senior advisor for dozens of campaigns and political bodies. His counsel was sought regularly by aspiring candidates, Members of Parliament, Members of Provincial Parliament and municipal leaders.
John was most happy at the cottage he built on Ashby Lake with his family and good friends.
John’s family expresses their thanks and gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Toronto General, Lakeridge Health Oshawa - Cancer Centre, and the kind staff of the 4F Palliative Care. Special thank you to Shelley, John's PSW, for exemplary care and support in his final months.
