John Stanley Planeta passed peacefully at Lakeridge Health - Oshawa Hospital on January 21, 2025. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend and will be missed and remembered fondly by many.
Born June 24, 1936, in Oshawa, ON, Johnny (aka Yannick) was a first generation Canadian and spent his entire life as a resident of Oshawa. Brought up by immigrant parents in a Polish speaking home in a Polish neighbourhood, he was a child during the great depression and the Second World War and learned the meaning of hard-work and struggle at an early age.
He was a mischievous student at Holy Cross School and attended high school at Oshawa Central Collegiate Institute where he discovered team sports. He excelled at football and basketball. He entered an apprenticeship program and became a tool and die maker at GM. John stressed to his kids that post secondary education was an expectation, and he continued to support them until they all completed university.
John was married for nearly 60 years and is predeceased by his loving wife, Kathleen (Kay) Dobos. He was also predeceased by his big brother Jim. John will be missed by his dear sister Adele. He also leaves behind children John (Linda), Michelle Flynn and Karen Amell (Derek) and seven grandchildren -Tyler, Matt, Chris, Michael, Shannon, Sydney and Luke and five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, all of whom he adored.
Post retirement, John’s summers were spent with Kay at the family cottage on Rice Lake. In the winter months they enjoyed leisure travel and joined friends on bus tours to Florida and Europe and cruised to Hawaii. He had a long, happy and healthy retirement.
After COVID, John sold the home he built and lived in his entire adult life on Park Road N. and moved into Bloom Oshawa Retirement Community. He met many new friends at Bloom and reconnected with others. He enjoyed his time at Bloom, and talked happily about the stories he and his friends would share after dinner in the library.
John loved spending time with family as they were everything to him. He was an honest, hardworking man, who always showed integrity and kindness. His was a life well-lived.
Special thanks to the staff at Bloom and the emergency and palliative care teams at Lakeridge Health- Oshawa. Their care, support and compassion is very much appreciated, and will never be forgotten.
