Martin Seekings passed away peacefully on January 24, 2023, at the age of 79. He leaves behind his loving wife Libby (Elisabeth) of 27 years, adoring daughters Rebecca and Faith, grandsons Matthew and Ian, and his devoted sister Patricia. He will also be missed by his sons-in-law and extended families.
Martin was an extremely intelligent person, which was evident early on. He skipped ahead in school, received a scholarship to Bradford Grammar School in England, and went to Oxford on scholarship at an early age, where he completed a degree in civil engineering. The Rhodes Scholars Foundation offered Martin a scholarship to go anywhere in Canada for graduate school, and he chose the University of Toronto. Martin earned his master’s degree in transportation engineering, which combined a lifelong love of public transit with his academic interests.
In Toronto, he built a career, life and family. Martin worked for Metro Planning in Toronto for thirty years, having a hand in developing the city's public transit infrastructure. However, he was at his happiest when he married Libby and retired to Cobourg, ON. In Cobourg, he volunteered with Your TV community channel as a cameraman, covering local events such as the Santa Claus Parade and local Junior League hockey games. Martin also built and enjoyed an epic collection of model cars, buses, streetcars and trains.
The arrival of his first grandson Matthew brought Martin a new role and purpose. Ten years later he was blessed with a second grandson, Ian. As a doting and involved grandad, Martin was a very important part of the boys' childhoods and supportive of his daughters as new moms.
A visitation for Martin will be held Sunday, January 29, 2023 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at the Oshawa Funeral Home, 847 Kings Street West, Oshawa, Ontario.
