I was fortunate to be one of Mr. Chappell's students in Oshawa Central Collegiate. I would never forget his dedication, his meticulous teaching style, his beautiful dress attire of always wearing a tie, his elegant handwriting on the blackboard of thesis, plot, character development.  Despite it has been more than 20 years since I graduated from his English OAC Class, but his persona, words, advice, encouragement, teaching style, and charisma is as vivid today.

My deepest, most sincere condolence to this wonderful teacher's family and loved ones.  Mr. Chappell was a caring, humble giant who will never be forgotten.

I am so heartbroken to hear of this incredible man's passing.   I was always hidden during my schooling.   Quiet in the back,  undetected.  My confidence was low and because I didn't make trouble,  no one cared.   This man,  for some reason,  began to single me out,  in a good way.   He was curious about my thoughts and treated my contributions like they were valuable.  I started to open up and with his encouragement,  moved to the front of the class.   I started to feel smart.   

Thank you,  Mr. Chappell.  Because of your belief in me,  I eventually went on to get a full scholarship at Berkeley and am now teaching at a title 1 elementary school in the states hoping to believe enough in these kids they might believe in themselves,  like you did for me.   I wish I got to tell you.   

You where the greatest Teacher I ever had . I wish you family all the best in this trying time. I hope I can inspire to be a great person like you were . Your sorely missed and your in our prayers

I also have the fondest memories of Mr.Chappell. He inspired me to read and started a lifelong love of books. He was also the kind of man who would discuss most any subject and challenged us to think outside the box. The pain in your hearts will never heal but I hope in the sadest moments you will recall an amusing memory, ours or yours, and smile thru your tears! With deepest sympathy.

Mr. Chappell was the number one influence for me ever doing anything creative in my life.  He taught me that a man could wear cowboy boots and still be passionate about poetry and romanticism, and make you passionate for it as well.  He didn't just make time for you but showed a genuine interest in the things that make you passionate.  A great English teacher in a dept. that had many of them.  He will be missed.  God bless.

I was told this sad news by another alum of OCVI. 

Mr Chappell (I doubt I could ever have felt able to use the familiar) was , and will always represent, what an English teacher should be: passionate, caring, motivating, and oeperhapsrhaps a little intimidating. Mr Chappell even looked as if he would not be out of place as a character in a Shakespearean play. 

I regret I never returned to thank him. I hope many others were not as remiss as I.

To his family and friends, you have lost a great person. To paraphrase the great Bard, the heavens themselves shall now blaze forth on this sad occasion. My thoughts are with all if you as you grieve. Please know that we shall grieve for you too.

There will never be enough words or enough thanks for what Mr. Chappell gave me through his teaching and his way of inspiring me to do better.  He was one of a kind; gruff, but ready to laugh, sharp, intelligent, a snappy dresser (in his ever-present black cowboy boots, tie and suspenders), demanding and encouraging.  He made a huge impact on my life and he will be dearly missed.  Wishing his family my condolences and the best of memories always.

Mr. Chappell was my English teacher at Central Collegiate, in Oshawa, in the early 1990's. When I arrived at Central, I was a stubborn (he'd say determined), insecure girl, that wanted to blend in with the paint on the walls. 

Mr. Chappell not only believed in me and my ability to set goals and achieve them, but he was also the first person that was more stubborn than I was. Not in a negative way, but if I only wanted to view a character's thoughts, or motive from one view point only and he wanted me to see it from a different perspective, he had me understand what he wanted me to without me agreeing to learn it. He had the ability to connect and teach us students in the way he thought would work best and for the most part it did. I hold fond memories of his class. 

Mr. Chappell touched many lives in this world and many memories of him are carried around in the hearts of those who knew him.

Mr Chappell was my English teacher at Central.  Quite the character.  There was never a dull class.  Sad to hear this.......and so young.  Condolences to his family.

Sincere Condolences.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  Mr. Chappell taught me English for two years at OCCI in the mid-eighties.  He was an inspiring teacher - in the true sense of those words - and he made a strong impression on me.  Just this past weekend I was visiting with a friend and I was sharing some terrific memories of some of his classic one-liners.  He will not be forgotten.  May God give you peace and strength in this difficult time.

Mr. Chappell was an inspiration to everyone who knew him.  He taught his students to challenge themselves and become better global citizens.  He had a passion for English that few people ever accumulate in a lifetime and he tried to pass this on to his students, even though some of us may have resisted.  When I graduated school in 1993 he gave me a book written by Margaret Atwood called “The Robber's Bride.”  Inside he inscribed a simple message, “Margaret Atwood taught me as I taught you.  Please pass this gift on.“  Up until this point I was planning on becoming a lawyer, but it was his words that eventually lead me to attend teachers college.  I would often go back to see him my first years of teaching and he always greeted me with open arms. Now 17 years later I only hope I am half the teacher he was.   As I sit in my classroom teaching my Grade 7 students about Macbeth I can recall and almost hear him teach me.   My deepest condolences go out to his family.  I also wanted to say thank you for sharing this wonderful man with all the students that passed through his doors.  So many people are who they are today because someone believed in them.

Mr Cappella was my favorite teacher at CCI. You see I went back to school at age of 36 and he was my English teacher. He showed me how to enjoy the old movies (A Street Car Named Desire) and read the classic books of Romeo and Juliet and understand what they were saying. He was a truly great teacher and have thought about him over the years since I've graduated. He was an inspiration to me and enjoy reading even more now because of him. Will be missed.

This man was more than just a teacher. His love of what he taught, which for me was English, and Ancient History, inspired me to try to do better as a student. He put so much effort into his day's lesson plan, and was one of the few that I remember who still used chalk on the board when it came time for my Senior year. The year he retired, I gave him one of my Shakespeare books as a going away present. There are very few people in the world who genuinely earned my respect, Mr. Chappell was one of them.

Mr.chappell was an awesome careing teacher, made class fun and interesting. Thoughts are with his family in their time of need. R.I.P Mr.CHAPPELLE....

Mr. Chappell was an inspiring teacher and charismatic person.  He brought professionalism, knowledge and a sense of fun to all he did.  Central would not have been the same place without his black cowboy boots and witty remarks.  May the thought that he influenced so many lives and that he lives on in so many people's memories be a comfort to his family at this difficult time.

Words can't express the loss I feel today at the passing of a great man and teacher gone far too young.  A teacher who dragged me by my shirt to class when I was skipping in grade 9. Who taught me to believe I could do well and do anything. He's the reason I went from doing poorly in school to graduating an Ontario Scholar and going to university. Gone but never forgotten Mr. Chappell. May you be at peace.

Pat and I knew each other when we were students at MCVI and reconnected when Vanier and Central were amalgamated.  Pat maintained very high standards in his courses and was an inspiring teacher who challenged his students daily.  My deepest condolences to Dianne, Stacy and the family on your loss.

Mr Chappell was my favourite teacher in Highschool.  He was that teacher for most of his students that was most influential... I can still hear him telling us that his 10 year daughter was smarter than us, and that the only university we would get into you would need snowshoes to get to! Even with his sarcastic nature he was a teacher that truly cared about his students and we all knew it, that is why sooooo many of his students will say he was their favourite! His legacy lives on in us all and we are all better people for having him in our lives! Thank you Mr Chappell for helping to shape who I am today!
