I met Rene while working in the Case Room, and spent many hours, working the night shift with her. I would pick up another Case Room nurse, then Rene, and off we would go to work, the reverse happened again the next morning. We shared our families, our experiences, our love for our profession, but the camaraderie, was wonderful! There was a shift, in particular that the three of us, were laughing so hard, we could barely give report to the next shift! Rest In Peace Rene, my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Rene was my brother’s wife’s mother and we always considered her to be family. I first met her in 1993 at my dad’s funeral and I remember how comforting her words were to me at that difficult time. She was an eloquent speaker; she had a real way with words. She was always at our family events and I remember her stories about her midwifery and nursing careers. I was always interested to hear about her experiences. She was also a wonderful cook! I remember a few new year’s dinners at her home and her homemade dishes were so good. She was a proud Brit, a respected nurse and a loving mother and grandmother. It was an honour to have known her. She will be sadly missed.

Rene was a mentor to me as a student nurse in 1978. Subsequently I was hired for the Caseroom in 1984. I worked with Rene as a team member and head nurse. I am still working in the Birthing Suite at Lakeridge today, some 40 years later. I am sure the love of obstetrics started with Rene. Please accept my condolences at this time of loss. It was my sincere pleasure to have known her and laughed with her. Bless you. Tammy Haynes

''I first met Rene, a long-term and dear friend of my husband Dennis, in 2012 in Oshawa and felt an immediate affinity with her. By the end of our 3 week stay she and I had established a very definite bond which was still strong when we met again in 2017 for her 80th birthday celebrations. We shall miss her very much and we send our deepest sympathy to Alison and Richard and their families. We shall be thinking of you all on Wednesday.''

A special friend since 1959, Rene was one of a super group of student nurses, which included my late wife Jean, in Macclesfield, Cheshire UK in the late 1950s. They worked together and socialised together. I have happy memories of the hospital balls with us all resplendent in our ballgowns and dinner suits! Rene was our bridesmaid when Jean and I married in 1960 and in 1963 with her quick thinking and decisive actions in the delivery room she saved the life of our eldest daughter, to whom she later became godmother. Despite the distance between us we remained in touch and had happy times together in Oshawa in 2012 and again in 2017 on the occasion of her 80th birthday. I will always remember her with great affection.

I worked with Rene for many years on 5A Labour and Delivery at the Oshawa Hospital. After retirement it was nice to get together once a year at our Christmas luncheons. Rest in peace Rene, you have earned it. My condolences to the family.
