Dr. Robert Cummings (Jan 10th, 1934 - May 13th, 2018) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Robert Cummings on May 13th, 2018 at Lakeridge Health Center in Oshawa in his 85th year. Devoted husband of Renee Paradis for 59 years. Loving father of Dan (Sue), Karen, Kevin, and Stephen (Lindell). Beloved Grandpa of Zachary, Ysabel, Cameron, Tyler and Mathew. Great Grandpa to Makayla. He will be greatly missed by his sister Joan (Pat), and brother Rev Donald. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. Son of the late William Cummings and Hilda Johnson, Bob was born in Carleton Place Ontario. Predeceased by his brother Rev Lloyd, 2016. Bob obtained his medical degree from Ottawa University in 1959 and was a dedicated physician, who was devoted to the care of his patients for over 40 years. He was very involved in the community, serving on many committees and boards, including President of the Medical Staff at Oshawa General Hospital, as well as Chairman of the Department of Medicine for 3 years at Oshawa General (now Lakeridge Health). In addition, he was Chairman of the Catholic Christian Men’s Organization of St. Mary’s Parish in Oshawa, and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a volunteer at the St-Vincent kitchen in Oshawa for many years. Bob was an avid sportsman who particularly enjoyed golf, swimming, skiing, pool and table tennis. He loved gardening and taking on many home improvement projects. He will be remembered for his kind generosity and his passion for sports and love of the outdoors. Special thanks to the staff at Lakeridge Health Center in Oshawa, especially the palliative care unit, for their kindness and the wonderful care they gave to Bob during his illness. Visitation will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King St. West (905-721-1234) on Friday May 25th from 2 pm to 4 pm and from 6 pm to 8 pm. Funeral service will be at ST. MARY OF THE PEOPLE PARISH, 570 Marion Ave in Oshawa on Saturday May 26th at 10:00 am. Internment immediately following the service at Resurrection Cemetery, 355 Taunton Rd East, Whitby. In lieu of flowers, donations to Lakeridge Health Oshawa, St-Vincent's Kitchen, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated by the family. Please scroll down to make condolences.

Dear Karen,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your dad. I have lots of fond memories of your dinner table, such the complete opposite of my Italian one. I remember your father as a quiet, refined man, who everyone would lean in to listen to. Always generous, I believe he actually enjoyed the summer noise when we all gathered in your backyard pool. My sincerest condolences to you and your family.

Dear Aunt Renee, Dan & Sue, Karen, Kevin, Steve & Lindell,

I have many fond childhood memories of all the board games we cousins used to play in your basement when Pat & Joan would pile our family into the car to visit with you in Oshawa.

With deepest sympathy on Uncle Bob's recent passing. We are keeping you all in our hearts and prayers. So sorry we couldn't make it back from B.C. to be with you in person during this difficult time.

We have been close friends with Bob & Renee for more than 40 years. Bob was a man of exceptional integrity. He deeply cared for his patients and the manner in which health care was and is delivered. As a devoted Catholic, he was deeply committed to truth. This led him to challenge the powerful within the Church, especially regarding family life issues and, at much cost to himself, Bob challenged the powers that be within the health care system also. Bob's commitment to Gospel values was also shown in his years of service as a board member on the original Oshawa Men's Hostel and his volunteer work with St. Vincent's Kitchen. Bob was an avid reader of today's leading thinkers within the Church whose writings enable us to gain new insights into the profound depths of our Christian heritage.
Years ago, we spent many hours together golfing and skiing with Bob and Renee; memories which we cherish. Bob, we will miss you, especially our weekly conversations on the phone and our get-togethers and visits over the past few years.
To Renee, Dan, Karen, Kevin and Steve, we offer you our condolences; you have lost a great husband and father.
Rest in peace, Bob!

While I have many favorite memories of Dr. Cummings it wasn't until I grew older and had children of my own that I realized just what a cool man he was. He quietly put up with many shenanigans by all of Steve's friends over the years with a grace and calm that today now amazes me. I spent so much time at Steve's in the summers back in the day the Cummings may have thought they had adopted me as another kid. While I lost touch with Dr. Cummings over the years as Steve and I grew older and started our lives, I always had the deepest respect for his career, his family and his passionate love/hate relationship with the Blue Jays. He always made a skinny pimpled face kid feel welcome in his world.
Rest In Peace Dr. Cummings

Hello Renee & Family! Michael and I are sorry to hear of the passing of your Robert ("Bob"), but we knew it would be his choosing as to when he wanted to depart. Bob and my Dad now have their wings and no more pain or suffering for either of them. It is a sad time, but we also celebrate their life and the life we had with them. So many good memories! We were fortunate to meet such a loving and caring family! Take care and all the best to you Renee and your family!
