April 12, 1919 – April 25, 2014
Stanley Bednarski passed away peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Friday, April 25, 2014 at the age of 95. Stanley spent his last six months at the hospital after breaking his leg in early November of last year. His health otherwise was pretty good as he wasn’t taking any medication and didn’t experience major health problems. In hospital, he deteriorated after all those months of laying in bed. He died in sleep with a nurse at his side. Stanley was born in Kozienice, Poland. At the age of 25, he joined the resistance army as a young soldier fighting in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. He was captured by the Germans and sent to a labour camp in Kassel, Germany which was liberated by American Army by the end of World War II. He was lucky to survive as he was near death due to starvation and exhaustion. After the war Stanley spent some time as a soldier mechanic with the American Army in Europe. He immigrated to Canada where he met his beloved wife, Eugenia “Genia” and got married in 1951. He joined the General Motors where he worked until his early retirement. He was an extremely independent man who enjoyed cooking, educating himself on herbal remedies, fishing with friends and traveling to Florida over the winter. The family would like to thank the neighbours from Mahina Street, Janet, Howie, Margaret, Ron, Caroline, Gord and Nancy who so lovingly adopted Stanley as their friend. I want to thank Voula for her countless days with Stanley cooking, dancing and bringing joy to his last years, and I want to thank the staff at Lakeridge Oshawa for the care he received during his difficult last days. Stanley will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Anne, grandchildren Crystal, Sarah and Julie, great grandchildren, nieces Krysia, Agnieszka and Ewa, nephews Wojtek, Marian and Felix and all their family members and friends. Visitation will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Friday, May 2nd, 2014 from 7 – 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at ST. HEDWIG’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, (411 Olive Avenue) on Saturday, May 3rd, 2014 at 11 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial donations in Stanley’s memory to St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church would be appreciated.
