He was a great teacher and an accomplished coach. However there are no awards for his greatest achievements.  

There is no trophy for being a loving husband, 4 months shy of 40 years.  And not a day passed in which he would not have gave anything to have Her back.

Three halls of fame, but no ceremony for raising two boys and teaching them right and wrong; respect and humility; honour and integrity.

And though I miss Dad and Mom every day, I will honour them by living a life that they would be proud of.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. It is comforting for my family to know that so many people know and love him as we do.

For most of my career I taught at Eastdale with Stan and always enjoyed his delightful sense of humour and valued his contributions in the many aspects of teaching.  I know his students admired him and respected his fair treatment of them.  You can be very proud that he inspired so many young people to achieve their  potential in so many ways.  My deepest sympathy in your loss of such a fine dad and brother.

Sincere condolences to all those close to Stan Marchut.  He was my coach from 1983-1985 at Eastdale.  His dedication (we travelled to BC and Nova Scotia)  and energy were contagious as I am now a middle school teacher trying to instill a passion for sports and integrity in life in general that Stan instilled in us.  Being that my locker was across the hall from his office, we had many oportunties to joke and laugh as well.  I remember fondly him throwing up his hands on the bench after about four of us missing a serve and saying for people who are suppose to be athletes how could we miss a piece of floor as big as a volleyball court!  He convinced me to listen to Linda Ronstadt and I managed to convince him to see Bob Seger (he told me he had a great time!).  Thank you Stan...because of your  influence and that of Bob Stuart at Central Park I chose my life's work.

I remember Mr. Marchut... wearing checkered pants... making me get a haircut on my spare, at lunch and after school, all on the same day, to play on the senior basketball team for a game against McLaughlin... him calling me a turkey... taking us to Maple Leaf Gardens to watch (in the greys) the OFSSA senior basketball final... his smile and laugh... he will be missed.

Stan was the kind of coach that inspired us to be more than we thought we could. He made you realize that your true potential was only limited by your own perception. "Just focus and go for it" he would say.  Great things happened during my 3 years under his tutelage; he taught me much about calmness under pressure, and composure whether we won or lost.  He was a gentleman of the sport and inspired many. He will be greatly missed.

I loved the fact that when I was at Eastdale, Stan kept his (messy) office in the middle of a long hallway, across the hall from the Eastdale gymnasium, and smack in the middle of our lockers.  He was therefore always around, keeping the "knuckleheads" in check, looking after us, hustling us to class, asking about our siblings and parents, our practices, our games, our travel and our grades and attendance.  He was a constant and positive presence in our high school lives that I'll never forget.  Thanks Stan.  You made a lasting impact on me and countless others.

We were very sorry to learn about Stan's passing. We have had many years of competing against his teams. Myself starting in high school while he was at Eastdale C.V.I. and I coached at Earl Haig in North York back in the 1980ties, then while my wife and I coached at Seneca. Stan was a fine coach, he was always a gentleman and a good sport regardless of the outcome of the match. We looked forward to competition against his teams. He inspired his athletes to excel on the court and in life. He will be greatly missed. Our deepest condolences to his family.

Stan you will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. I was only a newbie back in the early 80's when I met Stan. As a young lacrosse coach at MCVI I have fond memories of a fantastic trip together with Bob Deblois and Stan. It gave me an insight into the man that I came to know over the next 30years. Later when I became a volleyball coach I truly began to appreciate all the talent, character and charisma that he exhibited.  Wow! What a great career! I will miss your sense of humour Stan, and your laugh.

My condolences.  I was privileged to call him Coach during my years at Eastdale in the 1980's.  His legacy in mentoring young athletes is second to none in Durham.

It was an absolute pleasure getting to know you "post-high school" by working with you in developing the infamous "Eastdale Craft Show".  We were one of the first and had a great run for many years, raising an incredible amount of money for the school.  Your dedication to the athletic department at Eastdale was amazing! It was a real honour to work alongside you.  Your sense of humour and laughter will be sorely missed.  Thanks for all the good advice and for your friendship!

Stan was great teacher .He was one of the guys at Eastdale, 30 years ago. I remember losing a bet with Stan and I paid him with the worse bottle of wine we could buy. We had many a laugh over that. To his family sorry for your loss

Stan will be missed. I am sorry for your loss. He was my volleyball coach from 92-94. He coached me for 2 years and we walked away with two medals. He was an amazing coach.

Stan, I had the pleasure and honour of knowing you for over 30 years. We competed against each other in high school and the OCAA. Coached together at summer camps and worked together at Durham College. I even had the opportunity to coach Michael.
During all those years, you were the consumate professional. Always putting others ahead of yourself. Your many journeys through life always made others better for having known you.

I was coaching the Algonquin College womens team when I first meet Stan, we  coached together at an OCAA All Star game when I had my first real interactions with him, a very enlightening experience.  He was a legend back then in the early nineties and although I was one of the newer coaches in the league, he treated me as an equal.  Playing against Duham, and getting the opportunity to see Stan, compare notes on the other teams and chat about our own teams was always a warm and welcoming time.  I always enjoyed our short visits.

He was a great man and will live forever in our memories.

Let us be grateful for people who made us happy. Thank you Stan , raconteur , friend , colleague and mentor . We were all blessed to have shared your life .

My Thoughts on Stan.....

Stan, you will be missed greatly by so many people. Myself included my friend. It was a blessing to have had the chance to spend 24 years at the college with you and to spend more time away from the college as well. No more arguments about the New York Yankees that you hated and I loved over pizza and drinks at your house. Simply you were the kindest, most generous, most dedicated, committed, integrity based person I have ever met. Not to mention sense of humour. A true legend in every respect when it came to coaching volleyball at DC and in the OCAA applying those same traits. I was impressed with you and looked up to you from the first moment we met at Durham College in 1984. Who would know that our working relationship and friendship built from our time at DC would be such a great journey. All those successful women's volleyball seasons, delivered by you and so many wonderful women's volleyball players are something to marvel at. All those high school basketball tournaments we hosted together, the arguments over sporting events and teams and players in pro sports and NCAA sports, the laughs on so many wonderful championship trips and OCAA AGM meetings are all so vivid in my mind, like they happened yesterday. You put DC Women's volleyball on the map not only provincially but nationally. Dave Stewart made the best hire he ever made in bringing you in to build a championship calibre women's volleyball program at DC in 1984. I was fortunate to be along for the ride under Stewie's leadership and your early success in the OCAA and then truly enjoyed the last 12 years of your incredible 24 year coaching career working with you to insure we were the best we could be in wvb. You accomplished so much at a record setting level with numerous OCAA Chanmpionships, Division Championships, winning seasons and six National Championship appearances. Retiring as the winningest coach in Canadian College volleyball history. In taking a few moments this week in my office to reflect on countless memories running through my mind, I pulled out some archived varsity yearbooks and began looking through the volleyball sections. This brought back so many memories from over the years with Stan and our Women's Volleyball progam. The players, the hardships, the successes, the behind the scenes things that no one knew about but is so critical to delivering a championship varsity program, the championship seasons, the stories (far too many to list), the bus trips, the train rides, Stan's driving skills, the demanding seasons, the athletic banquets, hall of fames and more all came flowing back. What a journey. When I look at team picture after team picture for 24 years Stan was of course in every one. Also in the team pictures year after year were terrific young talented women who committed to Durham College and committed themselves to Stan and his drive and passion to succeed in the OCAA. Something I am very proud of is our student-athletes. It is one of the most wonderful parts of my job as an Athletic Director. Working with wonderful coaches that we choose to lead our varsity teams (and we have had many long time dedicated coaches at DC that have helped set us apart from other colleges) is something special. Having the opportunity to be as close to Stan for so many years was exceptionally special. Through the years, I got to know Beryl, and how she was so supportive of Stan's coaching career. She was a gem and was the strength behind Stan's success. I also reflect back on all the funny things Stan brought our way when he used to have to bring the boys up to practice when they were young. Best daycare in the world was our old athletic centre back office area while practice was on. Minus the washer and dryer. That led to nurmeorus funny stories and laughs. I will spare Michael and Peter and not share them here. There were however some great stories, moments and tons of laughs. Stan, you can rest in knowing your two boys are fine young men (not kids anymore) and that they will be successful in life having had you as their father. Although my close connection with Stan is directly related to Durham College, Stan was a champion educator and long time high school coach at Eastdale CVI and had an equal impact on countless high school students and players during his 30 plus years teaching and coaching numerous teams in LOSSA. He truly loved coaching, he was very good at it and wanted very little recognition for any success his teams had. In fact he would get mad about the recognition sometimes. He would quickly state after winning another OCAA Championship to the news reporter on site "That I didn't do much, the players simply make me look good." That was Stan. This has been a tough week but I found great comfort in looking through the many yearbooks we have in the department and the oh so many memories that they conjured up. I, like so many others, were fortunate to have known Stan. He was a special person who devoted his lifetime to teaching, coaching and making other people feel special. A true legend in every respect. And someone I will miss dearly.

So many great memories of the time spent with Stan 1995-2000. Being coached, and assisting Stan at DC I learned so much about vb, and myself. You were more than a coach, felt like a part of the family.   Love you Stan!

So sorry to hear of Mr Marchut's passing.  He was my Phys.Ed teacher in highschool and he welcomed me onto the volleyball team in grade 13 (even though I wasn't very good). My condolences to the family.

Stan, you were the most generous, genuine and humble person I have met. Thank you for all the great memories we shared both on and off the court. Thank you for all the opportunities and experiences you gave “your girls” and for always going out of your way for us...no matter where or at what time of day! Thank you for the road trips, gambling advice and laughs (although most at your expense – that applies to all three).

You brought out the best in so many of your players because you gave us confidence in our abilities. We would strive to meet your expectations because of the mutual respect you shared with each of us. These qualities you gave us go way beyond the court!

Thank you for being a father figure to me. Every time I see a car turn signal left on, hear Bob Seger, enter a gymnasium or go to the casino I will know you are with me. I will miss you every day.

Stan was a special teacher, coach and friend to so many of us at Durham College. He was the "John Wooden" of volleyball in the O.C.A.A.

Stano, you truly changed my life. You belived in me when no one else did, and gave me confidence in not only volleyball, but in life.

If this was the only story that could be told like this, you'd be a great man, but it isn't. There are undoubtedly hundreds of young women's lives you've made better.

I'm so sorry to hear of Stan's passing.  Stan was my coach at Durham College in 1984-86 and took us on to win a bronze medal at Nationals in 1986.  He was by far the most memorable coach I have ever had.  His compansion and caring for his players on and off the court was second to none.  He will be dearly missed and never ever forgotten.
