OBITUARY

Twila Wilhamien Ball

February 25, 1933October 13, 2020

Peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 in her 88th year. Devoted wife to the late Harold Ball (2009), Twila was the loving mother of Stan (Debbie), Stephanie (Michael), Vicki (Martin) and Vincent, and beloved Nanny to Katelyn, Blair, Connor, Christine, Alex, Lauren and Brandon. She is predeceased by her parents Art and Lillian Parry of Oshawa, and her brothers Art and Reg. A retired employee of the Durham Board of Education, Twila was a long-time member of Lakeridge Health Oshawa Auxiliary and was recognized for her service at the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario Gala Banquet in 2013. She loved her volunteer work, donating time to many local charities, and instilling volunteerism as a character trait in her children and grandchildren. Twila especially enjoyed travelling the world and visiting local restaurants and cultural events. She loved spending time with her many friends. A strong, fiercely independent woman, Twila set an example for her daughters and for future generations. Determined to give all of her children the opportunities she never had growing up, Twila spent many hours in local gymnasiums and concert halls, cheering them on, and later did the same with her grandchildren. She also helped develop an appreciation of the arts, by taking her children and grandchildren to many theatrical and musical performances, both locally and in Toronto. In accordance with Twila’s wishes, cremation has taken place. As an expression of sympathy, donations to Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre or the Hospital for Sick Kids Foundation will be appreciated. A celebration of Twila’s life will be held at a future date in 2021.

COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS The Bereavement Authority of Ontario has mandated: • Permitted gathering sizes inside a building for funeral visitation and chapel services, will be up to 30% of the maximum room capacities (excluding funeral staff) while maintaining the six foot physical distancing rule. • To ensure safety and minimize potential spread of COVID-19. • Further to the Registrar’s Guidance issued on June 15, 2020, wearing masks or face coverings is mandatory for all persons (funeral staff and attendees) inside all funeral establishments or any other indoor setting where a funeral or visitation is held. The Funeral Home staff will be responsible for monitoring these numbers and will be collecting contact information from each visitor, as per the Health Authority’s guidelines.

I send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Twila. I met her only a few times in her later years, through her son Vince, and she was kind and welcoming. As an avid family historian, I have been working on Twila's and Harold's families for many years. Twila descended from a variety of interesting backgrounds and had very deep roots in Canada. Her ancestors came from England, Ireland and France. Many were among the pioneers of eastern Ontario and Newfoundland. Only recently, after Twila became ill, did I find more about her French side, in which her ancestors Jacques Lussier and Catherine Clerice, both born Paris, France, were married in Quebec City in 1671. Almost 350 years in Canada! Twila would have been amazed and thrilled to learn that! I will be continuing my work on Twila's and Harold's trees, and I will be delighted to hear from any family members interested in corresponding with me. My email is heatheri@execulink.com

Condolences to Twila's family.
During my years and Twila's years at the DDSB, Twila was a really loved, popular gal, that everyone wanted to know. She and I shared many, many laughs, right up to our last conversation a couple of months ago when I spoke to her at Amica. She was in extra good spirits, said she had received a couple of cards from people which were lovely, but saddened her. She would have preferred seeing the senders in person. However, we carried on a long conversation and wound up with a good laugh! I'm so grateful for that last conversation and laugh with Twila.
She will be missed.

I was a volunteer at the Oshawa hospital when I met Twilla. On many occasions when I was without a car to go home with at night & would have to take a bus she was there to take me home or to any event outside the hospital. She was always there to give me a ride no matter how far out of her way it was.
Sincerely
Dianne Longley
