Born on June 27, 1930, in Randolph County, Indiana, Bill was the son of the late Omer Leroy and Halcyon (Woodring) Amburn. A 1948 graduate of Ossian High School and a proud U.S. Army veteran, Bill spent 47 years working in the heat treat department at Dana before retiring in 1996. He believed in showing up, working hard, and taking pride in a job well done.
To know Bill was to know someone who never met a stranger. He was a grandpa to everyone and a friend to all. He was stubborn in the most endearing way, quick with a little sass, and always had a way of telling it like it was. Beneath that tough exterior was a man with an enormous heart who loved deeply and showed it through his actions.
Bill found joy in the simple things—spending time on the golf course, tending his garden, and, above all, being with his family. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and there wasn’t a game, recital, birthday, or family celebration he wanted to miss. Being present for the people he loved was never a question; it was simply who he was.
His family will also forever remember the little things that made Bill uniquely him, especially the peanut butter and butter sandwiches he insisted were the very best. Those simple moments, shared around a kitchen table or at family gatherings, are memories that will continue to bring smiles for years to come.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Jan (Larry) Stronczek; his son, Joe A. (Emelie) Amburn; his granddaughters, Vanessa (Brandon) Ciminia, Lindsey (Jordan) Burke, and Stephanie (Corbin) Blomeke; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Watson, Maverick, and Fletcher.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Ellen Maureen (Bushee) Amburn, in 2008; his dear companion, Betty Schroeder; his brother, Dale Amburn; and his sister, Geri Coates.
Though Bill will be deeply missed, his family takes comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on in the work ethic he modeled, the love he gave so freely, the laughter he inspired, and the countless lives he touched simply by being himself. His was a life well lived, and he leaves behind a family—and a community—that is better because of him.
Visitation will be held at Elzey Patterson Rodak Funeral Home, 120 West Mill Street, Ossian, Indiana, on Friday, July 10, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with funeral services immediately following at 4:00 p.m.
