Donald “Don” Eugene Koop, 77, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 26, 1948, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Don lived a life defined by love of family, devotion to service, and a quiet strength that touched everyone who knew him.
Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, earning the rank of GMM2 aboard the USS Oklahoma City. His time in the Navy was a source of deep pride and shaped the sense of duty and integrity that he carried throughout his life. He enjoyed going to the “Okie Boat” Reunions with his fellow shipmates where he maintained lifelong friendships.
Don will be remembered for his steady presence, his sense of humor, and the way he always put his family first. He was happiest when surrounded by those he loved- whether that meant family gatherings, fishing with the boys, cheering on his grandchildren in their many adventures, or traveling with their best friends Jeanne and Tom.
He was married to his beloved wife, Sue for 48 years and together they built a family that was his greatest joy. Don is survived by his wife, Sue (Boone); his children, Christian (Jen) Koop and Emily (Scott) Miller; and his beloved grandchildren, Nevada Lenwell, Westin Miller, Paxton Miller, and Harrison Koop. They were the light of his later years. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Smith; mother-in-law, Mae Boone; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Christian and Kathryn Koop; and his brother, Edward Koop.
Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort knowing he is pain free in the arms of Jesus and that we will see him again someday. We are blessed by the countless memories he leaves behind and in knowing how deeply he loved and was loved in return.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 16933 Thiele Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46819, with visitation beginning at 9:00 am. A luncheon to celebrate Don will take place immediately following the service in the church gymnasium. All are welcome to join. He will be laid to rest at the Veteran's Memorial at a later date. Contributions in Don's memory may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church Building Fund or the Veteran's National Memorial Shrine & Museum.
