Henry David Close

Henry David Close, 82, of Otego passed away Friday, April 4, 2014 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital with his loving family at his side.

He was born March 23, 1932 in Pawling, NY the son of the late Edwin and Julia (Hinman) Close.

In 1941 he moved to Southside Drive in Oneonta.

In 1950, he married Barbara Gardner at the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta.

David farmed with his father and family for over 35 years.

After retiring from farming he moved to Otego and worked for Richard Loft lumber company for several years. He also worked for Root Company. He then delivered meals on wheels for over nine years.

David is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Close and their seven children, Terry Close of AJ, AZ, Kathy (Close) and Terry Schumacher of Mesa, AZ, Jacalyn (Close) and Robert Crandall of Hendersonville, NC, Mark Close of Oneonta, Susan (Close) and Andrew Smith of Piffard, NY, Lori (Close) and Greg Fowler of Maryland and Sharon (Close) and Robert Wooden of Rochester. He is also survived by one sister, Ella Eldred and a sister-in-law, June Close; nine grandchildren, Jill Marchitello and Amanda Hodgin, Kristin Dunham, Tate Schumacher, Kirsty Northrop, Amos Smith, Atticus, Madison and Carter Wooden; six great grandchildren, Peter and Joey Marchitello, Grace and Pierson Northrop and Logan and Lyla Dunham; as well as six nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald Close and his sister and brother-in-law, Marian and Ira Gardner.

Graveside memorial services will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery with the Reverend Laverne Saxer officiating. Memorial donations in David’s memory may be made to Feed the Children, PO Box 36, Oklahoma City, OK 73101 or a local charity of your choice.
