Laverne was born on November 20, 1945 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to Audy and Bessie Johnston and was the oldest of six children. In March on 1946, she and her family moved to Buena, Washington where they lived until 1962, and then finally settled on Othello, Washington. While in attendance at Othello High School, she met the love of her life, and on August 21, 1964, she married Larry Hollenbeck in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. They began their life and home together in Othello where they later had two daughters.
Laverne was a vibrant and caring woman who was full of life. Her passion for life exuded in her everyday life. She lived to help people and bring happiness to everyone she met. She loved to hose parties and cook for everyone. In fact, she had her own wedding chapel that was dubbed “Hollenbeck Excavation Wedding Chapel”, where a few unions were made.
She had a passion for costumes and had a large array of them. Laverne loved to dress up at holidays and special occasions. Anyone who knew her probably had a visit from her.
Laverne was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Rick. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Larry, of Othello, daughters Debbie Hollenbeck (Mark Wieseler) of Mesa, Washington, Cindy Hollenbeck of Othello, grandchildren Joshua, Cameron, Shanessa, and Chelsea, siblings Linda and Joe Carter, Betty Jo Johnston, Pete Johnston, Lorie Ann and Larry Howe, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service for Laverne will be held at Bess Hampton Memorial Gardens on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 11:00am. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Chapel. To view the obituary and leave a message for the family, please visit our website at stevensfuneralchapel.com.
