Part 4 - English
Making it to 95 with very few health problems is a blessing that God bestows only upon his most devout believers but sadly, for the rest of us, God, in his wisdom called upon him to continue his life in the company of his dear departed family and friends, and to prepare for our arrival when our earthly vessels release our spirits to the heavens.   He may have left us physically, but his great memories and teachings will live on in our hearts for the remainder of our lives.    
In closing, I pray the heavens roll out the red carpets to welcome Senhor Araújo as a reward for his noble influence on the lives of all those touched by his kindness and generosity.

Part 3 - English
This generosity extended well beyond tips and charity, going as far as helping some less fortunate relatives and even some close friends, and he did so humbly, with no expectation of recognition for such noteworthy and noble acts.  
Senhor Araujo, and the entire Araujo clan, made me feel welcome from our first meeting and, I’m proud to say, treated me like a family member since day one.   Senhor Araújo and I bonded over the wisdom of life’s lessons from his philosophical perspective while I contributed with some cheeky topical jokes that, perhaps only I found them to be funny, but he would still laugh along so I wouldn’t feel bad if they flopped.   Over the years I came to appreciate his overall positive attitude towards all of life’s challenges, often citing traditional proverbs such as “Don’t cry over spilt milk”, “Actions speak louder than words” and one of my favorites, “If you fall seven times, stand up eight!”.   
Senhor Araujo, unlike some of his peers, got to enjoy many retirement years during which he, with his adored Glorinha by his side, managed to travel to some great destinations.  Yet his favourite destination remained his home, in Arcos de Valdevez where, returning to his roots, he looked after his land where he had a few fruit trees and several grape vines growing.   At harvest time he truly enjoyed crushing his grapes the old-fashioned way, to make a very robust red wine that he would get to enjoy on his return visit, a few months later.   Sadly, with the passing of the years his mobility issues conspired against his enjoyment of travelling to and working on his beloved land which, as he often said, kept him “healthy” and “alive”.


Part 2 - English
Work, to senhor Araujo, was considered a dignifying human necessity that should be available to all.   I remember him stating that he did not like ATMs because, as he used to say, “they take away the jobs of bank clerks”.   
Senhor Araujo was also a private man.  His warm personality certainly endeared him to many who met him, but he preferred to keep his personal affairs private because, as he often put it, “Tens que ter cuidado com as más linguas porque podem manchar a reputação de uma boa pessoa”.    Senhor Araujo was also very grateful.   “The good fortune that God gives you should be shared with the less fortunate”.   He always carried change in his pocket citing that one should not walk past a beggar without giving a bit of money, “it means nothing to you, but it can make all the difference in the world to them”.  He was even more generous with his family, never accepting that anyone paid for meals when we got together for dinners at a restaurant or at social events.   
On this note I’d like to share a personal exchange that I had with him several years ago.  In an impromptu family get together at his home, pizza was ordered and delivered to the door.   I happened to be closest to the door while others were busy taking care of other tasks.   I thought to myself that for once I’d pick up the tab and proceeded to pay the delivery man.  When Senhor Araújo learned that I had done so he took me aside and with his unique focussed stare that was not threatening but made you stop and pay attention, he proceeded to give me a scolding, sternly reminding me that at his home he pays for everything!  He then also asked me about the tip I gave to the driver and was disappointed that I only gave the standard 15%...  Lesson learned, no one should deny him an opportunity to exercise his generosity.  

Part 1 - English
Senhor Araújo came from a very modest country life upbringing.  He was the last child of a large family, whose Christian values not only became his steady moral compass throughout his life, but also strengthened his unwavering dedication to his family.  In a few conversations we had about his early life he would, emotionally, speak about of the joy that taking care of his elderly parents, until their dying days, brought to him by often stating that “Those who took care of us when we were young deserve to be well taken care of when they’re older.”  
He also learned early on about the dignity of earning an honest living by the sweat of one’s brow and was very proud to share this wisdom with all who knew him well.   He once stated that when he came to Canada he didn’t speak the language and did not know any of the local trades, but he could prove by the calluses on his hands that he was not averse to working hard.  That he continued to show in his new life in Canada, by not missing any workdays, even when not feeling all that well.   He would still get up early in the morning to arrive on time for his job even during the worst snowstorms that would certainly shut down the work site.  His attitude was simple “Unless my boss tells me not to go, I’m showing up as scheduled”.   

Senhor Araújo did not much care to participate in lavish social affairs but certainly enjoyed cutting the rug with his favorite gal, Glorinha, as he affectionately referred to my mother-law well into their golden years.   He also continued to practice his Catholic customs of attending mass regularly and in conversations about this I recall him saying that “It is important to pray for health, your own, your loved ones’ and for the sick, for the rest of the departed, and to ask God for strength and for employment…  If God answers your prayers, the rest you should be able to handle on your own.”   


We were so sorry to learn of Mr. Araujo's passing.   Hold on to the precious memories of times spent together to help provide you with the courage and strength you will need to get through the coming days.   You are in our thoughts and prayers.
