It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Christiane Regina Kuntz, MD CCFP. Dr. Kuntz passed away peacefully just short of her 70th birthday on Wednesday November 26th with her partner Milo and friends Karen and Randy at her side. Chris leaves behind her partner Milo, her loving mother Edith, her brothers Markus (Cecile) and Andreas (Susan), sister Roswitha in Germany, and her many nieces and nephews who loved and admired her dearly; Katrina, Christian, Rebecca, Sebastian, Victoria, Andrea, Jennifer and Susanne and Thorsten in Germany. She was predeceased by her brother Stephan and her father Ludwig.
Chris grew up in Ottawa, the older sister to three brothers. Her parents were new immigrants to Canada from Germany, and they raised their family to embrace their German heritage through language, food and culture. On summer holidays, they enjoyed their cottage near Wakefield, and loved to visit family in Southern Ontario. Many German relatives were included in the family circle, either visiting here in Canada, or traveling to see them in Germany.
Christiane was an excellent student, being very competitive in her classes and winning many awards at Gloucester High School. She attended Medical School at the University of Ottawa and was eager to open her own family practice. Her office on Albion Rd. was a place of comfort, support and genuine care for over 40 years. Dr. Kuntz's patients loved her. She was more than just their doctor, she was a counselor, a mentor, a cheer leader and a confidante, all done with thorough professionalism, but also a dash of humor to soften the situation. Her dedicated staff rose to her expectations, providing the best possible care to the patients in their practice.
Chris's colleagues and protegees admired her dearly. She was a dedicated teacher for her many residents (aka "her medical children") over the years, being recognized with the "Faculty of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award" in 2017 and "Clinical Mentor of the Year" in 2021. She shared her passion and expertise in Women's Health with her colleagues as an active provider of continuing professional development locally and nationally.
Chris valued family above all and was foundational in all of the Kuntz Family Gatherings. She also appreciated and recognized her personal need to be away in nature, enjoying the log cabin in the woods that she shared with Milo.
Chris's bright smile and genuine interest in every interaction will be missed by all who knew her.
A special thanks to the Neurology staff at the Civic Hospital for their expert care over the past 4 weeks as Chris declined quickly.
There will be a visitation at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home 1411 Hunt Club Rd (corner of Albion Rd) on Thursday December 4th from 2 - 4 pm and 7 - 9 pm. Chris's funeral will take place at Good Shepherd Church 3092 Innes Rd, on Friday December 5th at 11 am, with a reception afterwards.
