It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Diane O’Gorman (nee Newman) in her 80th year, surrounded by her loving family. Daughter of the late Paul Newman and Catherine Hollis, Diane will be deeply missed by Barry, her husband of 57 years. She leaves behind grateful children, Chris and his spouse, Maria, Erin and her spouse, Bob, and adored grandsons, Will, Harrison and Finn. She will be missed by Sarah, Byron and Emma, who she embraced with love over the past decade. Diane came from a family of eight children and married into a family of eight children and she valued her relationship with each of them and their families. She will be dearly missed by her siblings, Paul (late Margaret), Sharon (Alan), John (Sandra), Chris, Barry (Fran), Cathy (Bruce) and Steve (Martha) and her equally loving in-laws on the O’Gorman side, along with her many nieces and nephews. She had a special place in her heart for her aunt Mary Winter and cousin, Lorraine Littlewood.
Born in St Catharines, Diane lived in several places, including Cornwall and Cobden, before settling in Ottawa, where she and Barry raised their family and became an integral part of their community. Diane spent her professional career at Canada Post where she worked in various positions until retiring as a technical writer. Diane’s generosity knew no bounds as she gave countless hours to St. Elizabeth Parish, hosted and helped organize regular family gatherings, raised funds for the Caldwell Family Centre and, with her husband, opened her home to many young people who came to Ottawa for school and work. As a mother, Diane instilled in her children the importance of honesty, hard work and kindness, from which she felt all other goodness would flow. As a grandmother, Diane excelled – with endless interest and patience, she made sure they had a beautiful garden to visit, cookies to eat and games to play. Diane was never one to shy away from adventure, visiting her daughter in Europe, joining her children and their families on vacations and realizing her own goals of walking the Camino Trail and visiting Israel. Simply put, Diane saw the good in every one and every thing, and she helped us all do the same.
A celebration of Diane’s life will take place at St. Elizabeth Church, 1303 Leaside Ave, Ottawa, ON, at 10:00am on Saturday, September 16th, 2023. Donations can be made in Diane’s honour to the Caldwell Family Centre. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre and oncology ward.
