

Mary Eileen Sametz, née Sanders, born March 18, 1924 in Guelph to the late Paul Bernard Sanders and the late Mary (Mollie) Raphael Hannigan, passed away December 9th, 2010 in Ottawa, with courage and forebearance and in peace..
Predeceased by her beloved husband Zenon and daughter Mary-Jane. Much loved mother of Roberta of Ottawa, Paul (Judy Kenacan) of Terrace B.C., Ellen of Ottawa, Peter (Susan) of Regina, Jeremy of Larder Lake, and Stephen Duquette of Saskatoon. Adored Grandma of Zoë; Beau. Rory; Saphra, Tatiana, Tiffany, Daniel; Matthew, Hillary, Danielle, Joel; Jennifer, Ananda (Joe Peters), Jonathon, Rachel (Dave Baird), Matthew, Michael and Jeffrey. Great grandma to Victoria, Jacob, Kaetlyn, Javen, Nevaeh, Ever, Evangeline and Zephryn.
A resident of Ottawa, Tenaga Quebec. and Venice Florida, Eileen was an indomitable woman and a formative influence on many, with her wit, generosity, fun, wisdom and stories. An accompished music (piano) teacher and then Special Education teacher, Eileen's career led to Vice-Principal at St. Mark's High School and then Principal of Frank Ryan. She loved that intermediate age group - grades 7 and 8 - and was loved back. She served as Diocesan President of the Catholic Women's League for several years, as founder of the Virginia Waters School in St. John's Newfoundland, the first school in the province for the physically handicapped, and as Executive Director of the YM/WCA while in St. John's.
Eileen loved to write - skits, songs, poetry, tributes to her friends, and a monthly article of home-spun wisdom, humour and family stories in Venice. Her last article was published in November, 2010. And she loved to hear and tell jokes. For her 70th birthday, her friends gave her a course to be a stand-up comic, which she took, and subsequently performed on stage.
Eileen is resting at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa; visitation is scheduled for Monday December 13, 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Funeral Mass Tuesday the 14th at St. Leonard Church, 5332 Long Island Road, Manotick, 11:00 a.m.. Later cremation and interment beside Zenon, in the Garden of the Last Supper, Capital Memorial Gardens. Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa.
