I was very saddened to discover of Dr Eric Poulin’s passing. 
I knew him only as a very grateful patient of his. 
In 2004 he performed stomach surgery to remove a cancerous tumour and I credit him with saving my life. At the time I was 47 with two young children who I have watched grow and both graduate university. 
He was a great man and was taken too young. 
My sincere condolences to his family.

I had the privilege of being Dr.  Poulin's patient in early 1999 at St. Mike's in Toronto.  He changed my life and successfully treated me with his (at the time) cutting edge technology with his laproscopic myotomy.       My father who is now a retired GP had nothing but praises for this fine gentlemen.  To this day I still remember the 
 "donut test" he did during post-op.  Very saddened to just learn about his passing.  Thoughts and prayers to his surviving family, he was a modern day Christopher Columbus.

Elle en garde un beau souvenir.
Éric avait fait avec succès une chirurgie à Paul dans les années 80.
Nous habitons maintenant à l'Île des Soeurs à Montréal.

On January 12, 2018 I was trying to find a way to communicate with the Poulins. Totally shocked I sit here thinking about the many years I had the priviledge of being their neighbour in Quebec City. Margo and I spent hours at my kitchen window chatting with my children listening and adoring  her! Eric was always there for scrapes and cuts and we had lots of those. How sad I am and my heart goes out to Margo who just adored her man. They did so much together and so well. Both were very good to me as they were to all that knew them. Margo, please know that Scott, Katherine and I are in shock and very sad.  Our love to you. 

i'm just learning about Dr. Poulin's death now. my condolences to his family, friends & all who were helped by him, as I was, as a patient. he saved my life in November 2009. i'll never forget how hard he fought for me or how great his care was.

Dr.Poulin performed major surgery on me in 2001.
Not only were his surgical skills impeccable but his pre & post op meetings were replete with encouragement and educational on how to deal with my recovery.
I feel that I am alive today because of his skill.
His dedication to his career was obvious,yet not flaunted.
I can honestly say that I have met with senior business and government leaders, and without a doubt, Dr. Poulin is the man I admire most.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing, on a recent follow up appointment at St. Mikes.
I extend my condolences to his family.

I had the honor of meeting Dr. Poulin while working at the Ottawa Hospital. He was such a positive and quiet man and his feedback was always appreciated. He will be missed.

I had the honour of working with Eric from 2004 until his " retirement "  in 2013. I want to echo all the compliments which have been stated about Eric. He was a man with a vision for excellence in surgery at the University of Ottawa and took no prisoners in his quest. He was a man of deep conviction and integrity and also a mentor and coach. He will be deeply missed by the Canadian surgical community.

I was so sad to hear of Dr. Poulin's passing. He was my surgeon a few years ago and he was the most positive and kind person I've known.  He will be greatly missed.

I had the pleasure of working with Eric as his colleague leading the peri- operative/surgery program of The Ottawa Hospital. He was an honest, forthright and caring leader. He provided me wise counsel as we faced the many challenges in health care. He taught me not to sweat the small stuff.  At senior management, he was a man of few words but when he spoke, he had our undivided attention. What I will truly miss, is his story telling-he was a master. Eric, we met on your first visit to The Ottawa Hospital.  You had a vision for the department of surgery and you inspired your colleagues to help you achieve it. Your leadership in surgery and at the Senior Management table was truly remarkable. It has been an honour to work with you.  Rest well my friend - you made a real difference! Eric  championed minimally invasive surgery while in Ottawa and set the Department on a quest for quality. He was genuine, fair and principled and I have missed him since illness forced his retirement in 2013. My deepest sympathies to Margo and extended family.

It was sad news for me to hear of Eric's passing. I had the pleasure to work with him when he was Surgeon-in-Chief at The Ottawa Hospital; I was the Head of Anesthesia. Being an anesthesiologist, Eric and I did have some divergence of views on issues, although there were very few of those. Nevertheless, I had and continue to have great respect for him. He was honest and had great integrity. It was a great honour to have worked with him. He will be missed as a colleague and as a great individual.

Nous avons appris cette semaine le décès d'Éric que nous avons connu non seulement comme résident de chirurgie mais surtout comme collègue de travail pendant plus d'une décennie à l'Hôpital du St-Sacrement de Québec.  

Nous avons rapidement reconnu le leadership d'Éric dès le début de sa carrière.  Il a entre autre développé et introduit la laparoscopie dans le programme de chirurgie à l'Université Laval, programme qu'il a dirigé pendant quelques années. 

Un collègue apprécié avec qui nous avons eu une belle complicité.

La nouvelle du décès du Dr.Poulin m'attriste beaucoup et je tiens à lui rendre hommage aujourd`hui.
Il y a exactement quarante ans aujourd'hui que le Dr.Poulin m'opérait à St -Sacrement pour une opération très délicate .C'était le ;17 mars 1976 .Il m'a sauvé la vie .
Grâce à lui ,j'ai pu élever mes enfants ;voir mes petits enfants et voyager.
Je veux le remercier pour toute la compassion qu'il a eu ,sa compétence
et son grand humour.C'est un grand homme que nous perdons et nous ne l'oublierons pas.

I had both the pleasure and honor of working with him for the 10 years he was in Toronto, and knew Eric to be not just a brilliant surgeon and visionary but a very compassionate and caring physician and leader. Le Dr. Poulin, un grand chirurgien et leader: le gars de la Beauce qui, avec les annees, changea positivement le paysage de la chirurgie digestive internationale! Son haut niveau d'innovation et d'excellence en chirurgie endoscopique furent reconnus mondialement. Le Dr. Poulin nous impressionait deja beaucoup lorsque nous etions residents a l'Hopital St-Sacrement de Quebec, avant qu'il ne soit ensuite recrute comme leader a Toronto, puis a Ottawa. Un grand "role model" pour nous a Laval en ces temps-la! 

Je me souviens aussi tres bien de son conseil de tous les jours: toujours etre honnete, genereux, et audacieux. Comme cela le decrit bien!

The University and the Department of Surgery have benefited greatly from the accomplishments that Eric made during his tenure. Eric came to Ottawa from Toronto with a plan which was to advance Surgery at the Ottawa Hospital. Eric did it his way, difficult as it was but he succeeded and we are now enjoying the fruits of his labour. He was very well respected for his integrity and he remained a very principled man and surgeon. Everything he did, he did it well.
We will surely miss his presence.

I have lost my best friend and brother in arms. Eric and I spent so much of our professional and personal lives together over the years, that he really was a part of our family.
