Freida Karkkainen

(nee McLeod)

March 7, 1925 – February 18, 2016

With dignity, and on her own terms, in the company of her beloved husband of 66 years, Olavi. Freida was born in North Bay Ontario to Eva and Roderick McLeod. Predeceased by her parents, brothers Cameron, Kenneth and Glen, sisters Florence and Mable. She is survived by sister Betty Smerchanski. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Allen (Sylvia), Pentti (Denise) and Nancy Thompson (Alf), 8 grandchildren and 16 great grand children. Freida was a proud WW2 veteran with overseas service, (Newfoundland). Her endless devotion to family is what she will be remembered for most. Her grand daughter Lisa defined her personality best; “Her grace and glamour are what stood out to the world. Her rebel heart is what stood out to me. I have lost the woman I’ve grown up admiring with awe and pride. Wherever you may be, a piece of my heart, soul and sass are with you. Time to head home.”

Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the General Campus, 5th and 6th floors. The family will receive friends at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road (at Albion Road) on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 from 7-9 pm. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at 11 am in the Chapel. In lieu of flowers in memoriam donations to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute would be appreciated.
