Henriette Lawnikanis was born on May 17, 1917, in the Austrian village of Rüstdorf. The oldest child of Rudolph and Henriette Dietrich, she was sister to Marianne (1922-2011) and Rudolph (1933-). Marrying Michael Lawnikanis (1905-1967) in 1948, she emigrated to London, Ontario, Canada the following year. In 1956 the growing family with 3 boys, Peter (1951-), Richard (1953-2012), Stephen (1954-) and Paul (1956-) moved permanently to Ottawa. Widowed before her 50th birthday, she returned to infant nursing at the Montfort Hospital until her retirement in 1982. Despite this tragedy she continued to be a caring mother, cheerful companion, family stalwart and tireless handcrafter and letter-writer. Until 2001, in her 84th year, she regularly visited her Austrian family and friends. While never enjoying fine health, her worsening arthritis, hypertension, and many surgeries could not daunt her unflagging positive spirit and sunny disposition. Sadly a vertebral fracture forced her to leave her private apartment and spend her remaining 2 years in a retirement residence. There she soldiered on bravely until her merciful death on June 9, 2022.
