

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margarete Lorenz (née Ziegler), his sons Peter (Christine), Thomas (Nina Del Vecchio) & Andreas (Lisa) and grandchildren Karl, Brigitte, Margaux, Frances & Grace. Herbert will also be greatly missed by his brother Helmut (Elke) of Laval, Quebec and their children.
Herbert was born on May 4, 1933 in Bremen, Germany. His adventure started when he took the USNS Gen. Harry Taylor MSTS – A, from Bremerhaven on August 6, 1952 and arrived in Halifax on August 14, 1952 as a landed immigrant. After three years in St. Catharines, Ontario, he moved to Montreal where he met Margarete (Gretel).
Together Herbert and his brother Helmut ran a successful business under the name of Radio Lorenz for 38 years. Herbert and Gretel raised their children in Laval, Quebec where they resided until their recent move to Ottawa.
Herbert was passionate about Skat (German card game) and was crowned Canadian champion in 1987.
The family will receive friends and relatives at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road (at Albion Road) on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. A Celebration of Life ceremony will follow at 2:00 pm. Capacity restrictions are no longer in effect, however proof of double vaccination will be required to attend. The family would like to thank the staff at the Ottawa Hospital and the Foxview Retirement Community for their professionalism and passion.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada to support caregivers such as Herbert was to his wife Gretel who continues to live with dementia.
