Born in June of 1934 in Derby, England, Dad grew up during the turmoils of WW2, often spending much time under the care of his paternal Grandparents in Burton. As a teenager, he was an avid cyclist and soccer player before coming to Canada. In 1952, weeks shy of his 18th birthday, he bravely shipped alone to Halifax, then onward by train to Ottawa. Where, he was taken in and worked on his older brother-in-law, James Saunderson's family's large farm. A few years later, while shopping at Ogilvy's, he met Mom, who was working there at the time... Both were pretty much smitten at first sight! Eventually, marrying in the Spring of 1956. In those first years, he worked for CN until finally joining the Ottawa Police Department, following in the career footsteps of his Father. In the late 60s and early 70s, he developed a great interest in Harness Racing. Resulting in the ownership of at least four horses, one a colt that was born on his birthday! After that period, he returned to England a few times with Mom, along with visits to Germany and France. Including doing a father/son European "Grand Tour" with Jeff. Then later, retiring in 1995 as a Sergeant after 35 Years of Service. The subsequent decade was regularly spent babysitting Devon and Kylor after school. As well as often traveling to New Brunswick to visit with Jo and Doug, until various ailments kept them both home to proudly enjoy their beloved Grandchildren and Great-grandchildren from afar. His caring, loving nature and dry wit will be truly missed by all...
Many THANKS to the very caring Staff of CITE PARKWAY Retirement Residence over the last year. Along with the Members of CAREFOR and HOME CARE who regularly attended his needs. Also, to the OTTAWA PARAMEDIC SERVICE, the ER Staffs at the OTTAWA GENERAL and MONTFORT HOSPITALS in recent months. And in particularly, to MONTFORT's compassionate Staff of "6C", who made his passing an easier experience for all of us.
In lieu of flowers, donations directed to the SALVATION ARMY (especially their Emergency Response Services), CHEO, and toward any PARKINSON'S Research, and/or having a MASS dedicated to him, would be most gratefully appreciated.
Meanwhile, the Family has decided on having a "Celebration of Life" gathering next Summer. Most likely in June around what would've been his 90th Birthday. Details are yet to be determined, but a timely notification will be made as to specifics.
