Leona passed away peacefully on July 29, 2021, in Ottawa, at the age of 91, with her daughter Barbara at her side. She was the beloved wife and dancing partner of Charles (Chick) Morrison (deceased November 2000), cherished mother of Barbara (Neil Cochrane) and grandmother of Andrea (Vadim), Gregory and Laura.
Leona was born in Prince Edward Island, daughter of the late Daniel Lee Fisher and Mary (Nee Lacey). Sister to Betty, Bernadette, Mary, Heather (deceased), George, John, Leo, Charlie, William, Vince, Ron, Don, and Gerard (deceased). Sister-in-law to Mary, Marion, Norma, John and Ken Morrison, as well as to Anne Brown and the late Alfred (Chick) Morrison.
Leona graduated from the Charlottetown Hospital as a registered nurse in 1952. She subsequently lived and worked as a nurse in various cities across Canada, until settling in Ottawa, where she worked at the National Defence Medical Centre, Riverside Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
In December 1955, Leona married Chick in Victoria, B.C. His military postings led them to reside in many places, including Moose Jaw, SK, Toronto, London, UK, Los Angeles, CA, and Ottawa. Their later years together were spent between Ottawa and Stanhope, PEI.
Leona loved music, dancing, laughing, playing cards and golfing. Until 2018, she continued to enjoy summers with family in her native Prince Edward Island.
In March 2019, Leona moved to Oakpark Retirement Community, and lived there until her final breath on July 29, 2021. The family would like to thank the entire Oakpark staff, from reception, administration, meal services, housekeeping, laundry, maintenance and nursing, to Dr. Ruth Farey, for their dedication and kind support. A special thanks goes to the amazing personal support workers for their patience and compassionate care provided to Leona throughout the past two years.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 4th, 2021 from 10:00 am followed by funeral service at 11:00 am at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home and Chapel, 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa, ON K1V 1A6.
