On Thursday, March, 12, 2026, Lillian passed away at the age of 81. She is predeceased by her husband who passed away in 2025. She was born to a farming family in Brockton, Prince Edward Island. She will be missed by her sons Bill and Richard, her daughters-in-law Kimberly and Jennifer and her grandchildren Nathan and Matthew. She is survived by sisters and brothers – Phyllis (Clair) Arsenault, Shirley (John) Berry, Robert (Nola) Murphy, and Francis (Tena) Murphy as well as seven nieces and nephews.
By the time she entered high school she had decided that her next big endeavour would be nursing. During her last two years of high school she started to prepare by combining that with a candy stripe program at the hospital which included a home nursing program and work in emergency.
By the time she finished high school, instead of embarking on a nursing career at the University of Prince Edward Island she embarked on a new initiative with William in 1963. They moved to Ottawa in 1964, where after having Bill and Richard she decided to pursue her nursing. She successfully completed a Home Nursing program under the direction of The Saint John Ambulance Association in July 1969. Over the first two years in Ottawa she became aware of another option, Computer Science which she pursued at Carleton University along with Accounting as a minor. She then pursued and obtained a Business Degree at the University of Ottawa.
Soon after moving to Ottawa she started working for the government and she retired in 1997. She worked in various departments and travelled extensively, in Canada and abroad. She spent one year working with the government in the United Kingdom. While leading an International Operational Unit she worked with representatives from the United States, Portugal, Greece, Germany, Italy, Japan and United Kingdom. In acknowledgment of her work over the years she was awarded a Merit Award in 1987, an Achievement Award in 1989, a Commemorative Medal in 1994 for a significant contribution to Canada, and a Governor General Award in 1996 for leading projects in Canada.
Since retirement she has travelled extensively enjoying 20 cruises and 16 winters in Florida. She enjoyed golfing, gardening and spending time with family.
The family will receive friends at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road (at Albion Road) on Friday, March 20, 2026 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel at 3:00 pm. Reception to follow.
