Peacefully, on August 25th, 2023 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital after courageously resisting the devastating effects of brain cancer this past spring and summer. He was in his 85th year. Mervin is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law: Chris (Krista), Terry, and Bill (Valerie). He will also be greatly missed by his cherished granddaughters Emily, Julianne, Laura, Sara, and Charlotte; his sisters Lola Dick, Loretta Reichle, his sister-in-law Alma Hanniman, and his brother-in-law Albert Kubiseski.
Mervin, a native of Dacre, Ontario, and son of the late James and Theresa (Murphy) Hanniman, was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Helen and their infant son Patrick.
Although we will all deeply miss Mervin, we will be forever grateful for the unselfish love, kindness and important family values he gave to us. His appreciation for the simplicity and beauty of the countryside and the outdoors will not be forgotten. Your love in our hearts, we’ll eternally keep. It is now time for you to rest in the peace of our Heavenly Father.
Visitation will be at the McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm on Tuesday, August 29th, 2023. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church, 685 Walkley Road at 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 30th, 2023, followed by Rite of Committal with Prayers at Hope Cemetery, Ottawa at 1:30 pm.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Ottawa Civic Hospital for their compassionate care of Mervin in his final days. For it is a nurse that opens our eyes when we are first born, and then closes our eyes when we die – may they be always blessed.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be gratefully appreciated.
