Peacefully in hospital, with family by his side, Olly passed away on July 21st. He was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario on March 20, 1930. Loving husband for 66 years to the late Freida (nee McLeod) and father to Allen (Sylvia) of Ottawa, Pentti (Denise) of Vancouver, Nancy Thompson of Ottawa and brother to sister Sonia of Grand Forks, BC. Predeceased by his parents Anna, Vaino and brother Pentti. After being raised in the wilds of Ontario’s north in Geraldton, Olly joined the RCAF in 1948 and after a successful and honourable 37-year career he retired to Ottawa. After retirement he and Freida took the road trip of their dreams to Alaska, the West Coast and back. After that they took their annual “Circle Tour,” Ottawa north to Geraldton, on to Thunder Bay, and back along Lake Superior through Sault Ste. Marie. Following the death of his beloved wife, Olly continued his annual pilgrimage to his birthplace with his final trip October 2018 with sons Allen and Pentti in tow. Olly was loved and will be missed by his 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, family and friends. Visitation will be held at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road (at Albion), Ottawa on Sunday, August 4, 2019 from 10 am until the time of the service in the chapel at 11 am.
