Osypa is survived by her daughter Mary Orysia Komarynsky (late Michael Ritch); Baba to her much loved granddaughters Jennifer Stecyk (Don Davidson) and Christine Stecyk (Rob Ward), deeply loved and cherished great grandsons Liam and Thomas Ward; dear Coci to Theresa Ross (the late David) Jonathan (Stacey) Braxton and Brooklyn and to Myron Rudyk (Rosemary) Shelley and Samantha (Craig). Mum enjoyed many happy occasions with her family. She also leaves nieces and nephews in the United States, Ukraine and Poland.
Osypa was predeceased by her parents Petro and Anna Rudyk, Mary’s father Volodymyr Komarynsky, her son Lubomyr Stecyk and his father Volodymyr Stecyk, as well as her brother Jaroslaw (John) Rudyk (Eleanor) and her other siblings in Ukraine and Poland.
Mum was horrified by the invasion of Ukraine as she, too, fled, with her son Lubomyr spending time in German camps before immigrating to Canada in 1948 where she worked very hard to start a new life. She was glad she chose Canada and was proud that she saw the country from coast to coast.
She was fortunate to visit Ukraine and to reunite with her brother and sisters after 48 years and to visit her village, church and other family and friends.
My mother was a strong woman with a beautiful smile for all and a role model to many. She was a generous soul sponsoring many families to come and start a life in Canada. She lived most of her time in her Glebe home surrounded by long time neighbours (Joan, Roger, Elizabeth, David & David) who watched out for her and helped each other.
Osypa was an active member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s league at St. John The Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine. She spent many years with her ”Pani “ friends cooking Ukrainian food for the bazaars and church events. She enjoyed her team of friends very much and was always willing to help. She also volunteered at the Ukrainian Seminary.
Mum loved nature and spent many happy times hiking the trails of Algonquin Park, her favorite being Big Pines where she touched and counted the big white pines every time. She spent many happy times at Mary’s cottage in Whitney where there was lots of entertaining of Ottawa and Whitney friends. Her garden in Whitney was full of sunflowers, poppies and dill!
Mum lived a long life and as many others survived many hardships and losses but always found a way to be positive and move forward. A life lesson well learned.
We are truly grateful to the doctors, nurses and PSW professionals who took such loving care of mum in the last numbered months. We say a very big thank you to these respected professionals.
