Sheila is survived by her four children; Pamela, Neil, Andrew & David, and five grandchildren; Erik, Samantha, Sydney, Gregory & Douglas. Mom was predeceased by her husband & best friend, Douglas Rattigan (1973).
Born and raised in an Irish Protestant family in Verdun QC, Sheila had 2 older siblings; Betty and Bob. She attended Verdun High School. Sheila was artistic, athletic and academic. She enjoyed skiing, horseback riding and all things outdoors. She also played and coached basketball and taught swimming and other programs at the YMCA. Sheila worked at Bell Telephone for several years.
In 1958 Sheila married Doug. They bought a house in Duvernay, Laval, where she led the local Girl Guides and Ranger troops. After being a stay-at-home mum for 12 years, Sheila returned to work as an Activity Coordinator for Seniors' programs at TMR Recreation Centre. A new job at Manoir Westmount and a move to Montreal West followed.
In 1989 Sheila moved to Guelph ON. She worked at Parkside Christian Village until her retirement in 1999 at 65 years old. In her retirement she enjoyed long walks with Folly, playing badminton, darts and bowling, also gardening and many church activities.
In 2015 Sheila came to Ottawa to be closer to her children and all her grandchildren. Lasting memories were made birdwatching, walking along the river, attending kids' games and enjoying family outings and celebrations.
She will be greatly missed!
Visitation will be held at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa, ON, on Thursday, August 18, 2022 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am followed by a service in the chapel which is also available through livestream or for replay at https://funeraweb.tv/diffusions/58818. All are invited to Sheila's reception following the service at Chez David, 3 Seabury Gate, in Barrhaven.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to World Wildlife Fund (WWF), The Dementia Society or a charity of your choice.
