Vicki was born on October 30, 1930 in Port Alberni, B.C. She grew up mainly in Kamloops B.C and later studied at UBC in Vancouver, where she completed a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation, she briefly worked at a Public Health Laboratory in Toronto prior to marrying her college sweetheart and moving to Zwiebrucken, Germany, where her husband was posted with the RCAF. She supported Ken throughout his career by consistently creating an ordered and serene home environment despite several military postings at bases throughout Canada. These years were punctuated by the birth of her two sons. She raised her boys with affection, kindness, respect and patience. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, she was an excellent cook, avid gardener, serious curler and dedicated bridge player. Upon her husband’s retirement, they returned to their childhood roots in Vancouver. Vicki and Ken enjoyed many years of good health and an active lifestyle. They spent their summers camping in British Columbia and the rest of the year golfing, cycling, picnicking on a sunny beach, exploring the European countryside or cruising to exotic destinations. They shared many of their adventures with their close friends, Bud and Muriel Pritchard. Their laughter and camaraderie as they shared a meal on the patio often had their neighbours wishing that they could join the party.
Vicki is predeceased by her beloved husband Kenneth Colin Commons, her brother Alan Stevens (Libby) and her parents Whitney Watters Stevens and Helen Douglas Stevens. She is survived by her sons, Douglas Neill (Carol Ann Elliott) and Gregory Wood (Susan), and his grandchildren, Alexander (Enya Vetter), Amanda (Umraan Quarnain), Jordan (Kadeeshia Solomon), Christopher (Julia Woods) and great grandchild Olive Commons.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ruth Farey, the excellent personal support workers and nursing staff at Oak Park Retirement Residence and MLC Health Care Services for their competent and compassionate care. We also greatly appreciate the team of knowledgeable and attentive doctors and nursing staff at the Montfort Hospital for their outstanding care of our beloved mother in her final days.
An informal memorial service will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.McEvoy-Shields.com
